Controls that reduce risk
- Find the approved hood-suppression drawing and compare every current appliance with its nozzle
- Photograph the appliance line, nozzle positions, detectors, filters, pull station, cylinder and control head
- Check the latest suppression-service and full-duct cleaning reports for unresolved defects
- Assign in writing who owns suppression service, duct cleaning, alarm testing, gas and electrical interlocks and corrective work
- Remove storage and equipment blocking the pull station, exits, extinguishers and cylinder cabinet
- Confirm the correct cooking-oil extinguisher is accessible and staff know that water is dangerous on hot oil
- Ask the service provider to demonstrate the cause-and-effect matrix using an approved test method
- Verify every protected gas and electrical appliance actually shuts down during the test
- Confirm the building alarm or monitoring point receives the correct activation signal
- Set cleaning intervals from cooking hours, process and grease observations; increase frequency for frying, wok and chargrill operations
- Require post-clean photos or measurements and a map of inaccessible sections
- Introduce a signed change-control check before any appliance, hood, duct, fan, fuel or cooking-process change
- Train every shift to stop heat if safe, pull the manual release, evacuate, call 112 and report missing persons
- Create an impairment rule that stops affected high-risk cooking until equivalent protection is authorised
- After a fire or discharge, preserve evidence and obtain competent mechanical, electrical, gas, fire-system and duct clearance

Why Do I Need an Inspection?

Semi-Annual Inspections
The NFPA says that kitchen hood suppression systems must be checked by a certified professional every six months. During a typical inspection of a kitchen hood, these things are done:
- Check nozzle and conduit locations.
- Make sure pipes are tight and secure.
- Clean nozzles.
- Check pressured cylinder gauges and hydrostatic test dates.
- Test the manual pull station.
- Cut a terminal test link to make sure the automatic actuation cycle works.
- Make sure electricity and gas are turned off when the system turns on.
- Replace any parts that need it, such as center link housings, system cartridges, and fusible links.
- How well electrical interlocks work
- Write down and tell the inspector about any problems that were found.
After a professional does the twice-yearly inspection, you should have paperwork to show that your system is compliant. This includes tagging, keeping track of any repairs, and a report of the inspection.
Monthly Inspections
Only trained professionals should do the inspections every six months, but the building owner is responsible for the monthly visual checks. A visual check of the nozzles, gauges, and tamper indicators is part of these inspections. The building owner should also check for grease build-up in the hood or duct and make sure the pull station is not blocked.
Common unsafe practices
- Checking only the cylinder gauge and inspection tag
- Treating semi-annual service as sufficient regardless of heavy frying, solid fuel or rapid grease accumulation
- Cleaning visible filters while leaving the plenum, fan and hidden duct coated
- Moving, replacing or adding appliances without redesigning nozzle and detector coverage
- Using temporary tabletop fryers or LPG burners outside the protected footprint
- Painting, taping, tying or obstructing nozzles, links, detectors or the manual pull
- Failing to test gas and electrical shut-off, alarm transmission and fan sequence together
- Installing an electrical-only manual release without confirming emergency-power and approval requirements
- Leaving the manual pull behind stock, a hot appliance or a locked counter
- Applying water or an unsuitable extinguisher to burning cooking oil
- Resetting a discharged system or reopening the kitchen before authorised recharge and cause investigation
- Accepting a cleaning certificate that omits inaccessible or uncleaned duct sections
- Allowing grease-laden filters to be removed while cooking continues
- Failing to coordinate tenant, landlord and mall responsibilities where the duct crosses property or fire compartments
- Not stopping cooking when the suppression system is impaired
