Srinagar Bemina Durbal Shelter Fire: Two Scrap Collectors Dead, About 80 Temporary Shelters Burn; Cause Under Investigation

Soon after midnight on 3-4 November 2026, a fire swept through about 80 temporary shelters made of tarpaulin and wood at Durbal in the Bemina area of Srinagar. The Fire and Emergency Services Department says it was reported at about 12.23 am; tenders from the JVC and Rawalpora fire stations went first, and more tenders and water bowsers came from headquarters at Batamaloo. Officials said the flames had spread across the entire area before the fire service was called. After the fire was controlled, two bodies were recovered from the debris: a 27-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, both scrap collectors. An empty poultry farm and a tipper also burnt. The cause is not established. How many people lived in the shelters, how the two died and whether any relief or inquiry has been ordered are not reported.
