Do Fire Extinguishers Expire?

Fire extinguishers do not all share a single universal expiry date. Their continued service depends on type, construction, charge, condition, inspection, maintenance, refilling and required pressure or performance testing. IS 2190:2024 covers selection, installation, maintenance and testing of portable and wheeled first-aid extinguishers in India and defines a competent person as someone with the training, experience, tools, parts and manufacturer information required for the work. Users can check access, gauge, seal and visible damage, but opening, refilling, internal maintenance and hydrostatic testing belong to competent service personnel.

Controls that reduce risk

  1. Create an extinguisher register with serial number, type, location and due dates
  2. Check that each unit is visible, accessible and appropriate for the hazard
  3. Look for a missing pin or seal, gauge outside its operating range, corrosion, dents, leakage or damaged hose
  4. Read the manufacture, maintenance and hydrostatic-test markings rather than guessing from appearance
  5. Tag and isolate suspect units so nobody relies on them
  6. Book service only with a competent provider using correct parts, agent and test equipment
  7. Place equivalent protection while a unit is removed
  8. Teach staff that an extinguisher is optional only for a tiny fire with a clear exit; evacuation comes first

Understand and apply the guidance

Fire extinguishers will wear out eventually. At some point, all fire extinguishers will stop working, but there isn’t always a hard and fast date for this. As the first line of defence against a fire, it’s important to make sure that your extinguishers still work and are in good shape.

How long do fire extinguishers work?
The length of time an extinguisher works depends on a number of things, such as:

  • Type of fire extinguisher
  • Whether the extinguisher is disposable or rechargeable
  • How well the extinguisher is maintained
  • The date it was made
  • Recommendations from the manufacturer

According to NFPA rules, disposable fire extinguishers need to be replaced every 12 years, and rechargeable fire extinguishers need to be charged every 6 years. The plastic head of a disposable fire extinguisher has a gauge that says “full” or “empty.” The metal head of a rechargeable extinguisher has a gauge that says “charge” or “recharge.”
How Do You Know If Your Extinguisher needs to be replaced?
Some fire extinguishers have an expiration date set by the company that made them. But many fire extinguishers don’t have clear expiration dates, which can make it hard to know when they need to be replaced. You should look at your fire extinguishers once a month to make sure they are still working. You should watch out for the following:

  • Letting off the pressure: Many fire extinguishers have pressure gauges. If the needle on your fire extinguisher moves out of the green area, it’s time to replace it. Fire extinguishers that have lost their pressure can’t be used.
  • Signs of Damage: If your fire extinguisher has broken parts, rust, or corrosion, it may not work right and may need to be replaced.
  • Failed Hydrostatic Test: A company that services fire extinguishers can do a hydrostatic test to see how well the cylinder of your extinguisher works. If your fire extinguisher doesn’t pass the test, you must get a new one immediately.

As rules change or technology improves, some types of fire extinguishers are no longer needed. Guidelines from the NFPA say which types of extinguishers should be taken out of use. If you have an older fire extinguisher, you should talk to someone who knows about fire protection to find out if it is still useful.

Common unsafe practices

  • Copying a 6-year or 12-year US interval into an Indian maintenance plan without checking IS 2190:2024
  • Looking only at a green gauge and ignoring corrosion, damage, blocked hoses or missing seals
  • Rehanging an extinguisher after a brief discharge without servicing it
  • Letting an untrained person open, refill or pressure-test a cylinder
  • Painting over labels, service records or cylinder markings
  • Mixing incompatible agents, parts or recharge materials
  • Leaving an area without equivalent protection while units are away for service
  • Discarding a pressurised cylinder in ordinary waste or deliberately discharging it without safe arrangements

  3. Do not use a unit with damage, leakage, missing controls or an out-of-range indicator
  4. Stop if one extinguisher does not control the fire immediately
  5. Back out, close the door where safe and call 112 from outside
  6. Never re-enter to retrieve another extinguisher or inspect the fire
  7. Report every use so the unit is removed, serviced or replaced before anyone relies on it again

Limitations

  • Intervals vary by extinguisher type, construction, application, product standard and authority requirements
  • The OISD schedule is written for oil-industry facilities and its cited DCP interval is not a complete table for every extinguisher
  • Manufacturer instructions may require earlier withdrawal or replacement
  • A visual check cannot confirm internal cylinder integrity
  • Online video content may reflect an older IS 2190 revision
  • Only a competent examination can determine whether a questionable unit can be serviced or must be condemned
