What happened on 5 November 2026
On the evening of Thursday, 5 November 2026, a passenger bus and a truck collided on Depalpur Road, near 17 SP Stop in Pakpattan district, Punjab, Pakistan. Most reports say the bus was on its way from Multan to Kasur and the truck was coming from the opposite direction; ARY News and one other site say the bus was bound for Lahore. Rescue 1122 spokesperson Umair Iqbal, quoted by The Express Tribune, put the toll at at least 11 dead and 33 injured. Nukta reports that Rescue 1122 received the call at 6.38 pm, and that early reports of four deaths rose to 11 as rescuers worked through the wreckage.
The district administration and Rescue 1122 named two of the dead as officials: one from the Punjab Patrolling Police and one from the Para Force. Dawn reports that all the dead were men when it filed. We have not named anyone who died or was hurt.
What officials and rescuers say
- Rescue: Rescue 1122 sent nine vehicles and about 20 rescuers (Nukta). Passengers were trapped, and teams worked for about two to three hours with cranes, hydraulic cutters and other heavy machinery to cut out seats and metal (Dawn, Express Tribune, Nukta). Villagers and passers-by helped the injured, per Dawn.
- The injured: Rescue 1122 said eight people had minor injuries and 25 were taken to the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Pakpattan (Dawn, The Nation). Dawn reports that two critical patients were referred to Sahiwal Teaching Hospital. Pakpattan Deputy Commissioner Asif Raza declared an emergency at the hospital and called in extra doctors and staff.
- The cause, so far: Arab News reports that an incident report compiled by Rescue 1122 Punjab says the bus was speeding while overtaking a motorcycle. Dawn says eyewitnesses told it the crash apparently resulted from the bus driver speeding on a single-carriageway road, and that the bus overturned after hitting the truck. Neither is a finished investigation. The Express Tribune, Aaj News and The Nation state no cause, and Nukta says the highway and traffic police had not confirmed one.
- Government response: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz sought a report and, per Nukta, an inquiry covering the circumstances, the roadworthiness of the vehicles and possible traffic negligence. President Asif Ali Zardari and National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq sent condolences.
How the toll was counted
The toll is the Rescue 1122 count of 11 dead, repeated by Dawn, The Express Tribune, ARY News, Aaj News, The Nation and Arab News. It is a count of bodies recovered from the wreckage and taken to the DHQ Hospital. The 33 injured is also Rescue 1122’s figure, made up of 8 treated for minor injuries and 25 taken to hospital. We looked for a rise in the toll, an arrest or an FIR in reports up to 8 November 2026 and found none. The latest articles we opened are from 6 November. If one of the critical patients has died since, we have not seen it.
Where reports differ, and what we do not know
- Truck or trailer: The Express Tribune, Dawn’s text and The Nation say truck; Aaj News says a 10-wheeler truck; a Dawn photo caption and the President’s office, per Arab News, say trailer; one site says a trailer loaded with potatoes, which we could not confirm elsewhere.
- The injured: Dawn’s opening line calls all 33 seriously injured, and Nukta says 25 were critical. Rescue 1122’s own split, as reported by Dawn and The Nation, is 8 minor and 25 taken to hospital. These are not 33 critical cases.
- Route: Multan to Kasur (Express Tribune, Dawn, Nation, Minute Mirror) or Multan to Lahore (ARY News).
- How it happened: a head-on collision with an oncoming truck (most reports) or a bus overtaking a motorcycle at speed (Arab News, citing Rescue 1122). Both could be true: an overtaking move into the oncoming lane would end exactly like this. That is our reading and not a finding.
- Place: Dawn’s article places the stop in Sahiwal, while every other report says Pakpattan. Nukta mentions Torri Centre. The map point is approximate.
- Not found: the driver’s condition or name, whether either vehicle was overloaded or roadworthy, the number of passengers on board, any FIR or arrest, and any official finding. We could not open Pakistan Today, which a scout note had flagged.
Why this case matters
Depalpur Road is an ordinary single carriageway through farm country, with buses, loaded trucks and motorcycles sharing one lane each way. On such a road, one bad overtake puts a bus into the face of a loaded truck, and nobody has room to correct. Rescue 1122 data quoted by The Express Tribune puts Punjab’s road accidents in October 2026 at 44,797, with at least 464 deaths, and motorcycles in nearly a third of the crashes.
This was one of two serious bus crashes in Pakistan in two days. The next morning a bus from Gilgit hit a dumper on the Hazara Motorway near Havelian; those are separate crashes with different causes. For another Punjab transport case on our site, see the Rahman Baba Express derailment near Multan. For a head-on bus crash in India, see Periyapatna, Mysuru.
What passengers, drivers and families can do
- As a passenger: if the driver is overtaking on a two-lane road at high speed, say so out loud, and do it early. Choose the seat belt where one exists, even on a bus. Sit away from the front when you can.
- As a driver: overtake only when you can see far enough ahead to finish the move and get back, including past a slow motorcycle. If a loaded truck is coming, the safe move is to wait behind. Our guide on night bus crashes in India and South Asia covers speed, fatigue and lights.
- If you are on a bus that crashes: do not push for the door. Check yourself for neck or back pain, and do not move someone with a suspected spine injury unless there is fire or danger. Read road accident first aid and why the first hour matters.
- Whom to call: in Pakistan, Rescue 1122 is the emergency number in Punjab and it was the first agency on this scene. For readers in India, see emergency numbers in India and how to call 112, 101 or 108. In either country, give the road name, the nearest stop or landmark, and the number of injured.
- Rescue 1122 receives the emergency call and sends nine vehicles and about 20 rescuers (Nukta)
- Passengers are trapped in the bus; rescuers use cranes and cutters for about two to three hours (Dawn, Express Tribune)
- Dead and injured are taken to DHQ Hospital Pakpattan; the Deputy Commissioner declares an emergency (Express Tribune, Aaj News)
- Aaj News, ARY News and The Express Tribune publish: 11 dead, 33 injured
- Arab News reports a Rescue 1122 incident report on speeding while overtaking a motorcycle; Dawn reports eyewitness accounts of speeding and two critical patients sent to Sahiwal
- No report found of a higher toll, an FIR, an arrest or an inquiry finding
Why consequences escalated
- A passenger bus and a truck collided on Depalpur Road, Pakpattan, on the evening of 5 November 2026; Rescue 1122 reports 11 dead and 33 injured.
- The dead include a Patrolling Police official and a Para Force person; all dead were men when Dawn filed.
- A Rescue 1122 incident report, as cited by Arab News, says the bus was speeding while overtaking a motorcycle; eyewitnesses told Dawn the bus driver was speeding.
- No official cause, FIR or arrest was found; the Chief Minister sought a report and an inquiry.
- Outlets differ on truck or trailer, Kasur or Lahore, and on how seriously the 33 were hurt.
Failures and risk multipliers
- No official finding exists. What the reports raise as questions:
- Whether the bus driver overtook a motorcycle at speed into the path of an oncoming truck on a single carriageway.
- Whether either vehicle was overloaded, in poor condition or carrying more than its permitted load.
- Why the bus overturned and how much speed contributed to the number of deaths.
- These are reports and questions, not findings of fault.
Actions that reduce risk
- Passengers: speak up early if the driver overtakes at speed on a two-lane road; wear the seat belt where there is one.
- Drivers: overtake only with a long, clear view ahead, including past motorcycles; wait behind if a loaded truck is coming.
- Authorities: the Chief Minister has asked for an inquiry covering vehicle roadworthiness and traffic negligence; its findings are not yet public.
- In a crash: call the emergency service (Rescue 1122 in Punjab), give the road, nearest stop and number of injured, and do not move anyone with a suspected spine injury unless there is fire or danger.
