Rainfall and monsoon
Check how rainfall changes through the year and over the decades.
Historical data, not a weather forecast
Rain is a rough estimate. Monthly rain here comes from a computer model. It follows wet and dry years but misses heavy downpours, so it carries low confidence. We do not show heavy-rain days, the wettest day or dry spells.

Monsoon rain published by IMD
Rain for the whole of India from June to September, as a percentage of the long period average (LPA) that IMD uses. 100 means an average monsoon; below 100 is drier and above 100 is wetter. These are IMD’s own figures, measured by rain gauges. We have not changed them, and IMD has not endorsed this page.

Where each figure comes from
Heavy-rain days
Not available
Counting heavy-rain days needs daily rain from rain gauges. The model’s daily rain misses many downpours (at the three cities we checked it counted 2 to 9 times fewer heavy-rain days than gauges), so we do not show a count.
Longest dry spell
Not available
A dry spell needs daily rain, a stated limit for a dry day and a rule for missing days. None of these is available from monthly totals.

Useful for farmers
Look at past seasonal rainfall for planning. Check current forecasts and official agriculture advisories before sowing or irrigation.
Stay safe during heavy rain
See simple flood and lightning safety guides, and check current official warnings separately from historical rainfall.

What we cannot show yet
Heavy-rain days
Not available
See the Heavy Rain tab.
Wettest day
Not available
The wettest day of a year also needs checked daily rain. We hold monthly totals only, so we cannot say how much fell in a single day.

How to read this page
- Monthly and seasonal totals are in mm, from the ERA5 model, for a square about 28 km wide. “Usual” is the 1991 to 2020 average for the same months.
- Monsoon share is the part of the year’s rain that falls from June to September at that place. It is worked out from the model, so it is a rough guide.
- IMD percentages describe the whole of India, not your city. A normal monsoon for India can still be a dry one for a single district.
- Not a forecast. Past rainfall cannot tell you when it will rain next. Check IMD for forecasts and warnings.
Common questions
Common questions
Why is there no count of heavy-rain days or dry spells?
Those need daily rain measured by rain gauges. The model rain used here follows wet and dry years but misses many downpours: at the three cities we checked it counted 2 to 9 times fewer heavy-rain days than gauges. So we show “Not available” instead of a number that could mislead you.
Does the monthly chart show how much rain fell on a particular day?
No. Each bar is a month’s total in mm, averaged over many years or taken for one year. A month can hold one huge downpour or many light showers and look the same.
What does the monsoon share mean?
It is the part of a year’s rain that falls from June to September at that place, worked out from the model’s monthly rain. It is a rough guide to how monsoon-dependent a place is. It is not an IMD figure.
Data to September 2026. Figures from July 2026 onwards are early and can change a little. Refreshed about every three months. “Usual” means the 1991 to 2020 average. See Data sources and methods.
