2:19Customer pulls an injured driver from a car just before it catches fireUnited StatesThis group covers crash scenes, burning cars, a car that fell into a canal and workers shocked by electricity. In each one, someone nearby acted in the first few minutes, before the ambulance or the fire engine could reach the spot. Some of their choices were brave and some were risky, and our notes say which.
What can you safely do? Stop in a safe place, switch on your hazard lights and call 112 or 108. Do not move an injured person unless they are in danger where they lie, for example from fire. Keep well away from a burning vehicle and its fuel tank, and call 101 or 112. For an electric shock, never touch the person until the power is off. Switch off at the main switch or MCB. Stay 8 to 10 metres from a fallen or overhead line and call 112 and the electricity company. If the person does not respond and is not breathing normally, start CPR.
In India, the Good Samaritan law protects a person who helps a crash victim in good faith. These videos are not first-aid or rescue training, and some people in them took risks you should not copy. We choose public YouTube videos that match a reported incident and can be played here, and we avoid graphic footage. Our guides on road accident first aid, what to do as a witness, car fires, electric shock and the Good Samaritan law are linked at the bottom of this page.
