What happened
On the evening of Tuesday, 27 October 2026, a UP Roadways bus went through the middle of Padrauna town in Kushinagar district, Uttar Pradesh, hitting people and vehicles for about five kilometres. It was reportedly empty. Police say a breath-analyser test found the driver drunk. One person died. Reports put the injured at somewhere between 10 and 19, and one report says about 20 people were hit in all. Checked 28 October 2026.
The trouble began at around 7.20 to 8 pm near Subhash Chowk. The reports do not agree on what the bus struck first. Amar Ujala says it hit a tempo full of passengers, which overturned at the roadside. NewsX says two parked autos, with nobody hurt in that first impact. ETV Bharat says a parked car. After that, all accounts agree, the bus did not stop. It ran on through the Chhawni area, hit pedestrians and other vehicles, and was finally stopped by a police barricade at Ravindra Nagar Dhus. The driver was taken into custody there.
Twenty minutes on a public road
NewsX puts the run at about 20 minutes. Amar Ujala describes a woman buying puffed rice from a cart among those hit, and tempo passengers, bikers and walkers among the injured. A private hospital on Chhawni Road took the first patients. The rest went to the district hospital, and police helped move the serious cases to BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur. NewsX says four were referred there, 13 were treated at the district hospital and two were admitted privately. Amar Ujala says one injured woman, a 40-year-old, was pregnant with a severe head injury and was referred to Gorakhpur. It describes about 40 minutes of confusion on the road between Chhawni and the medical college.
Where the reports disagree
- Who died: Amar Ujala, Jagran and NewsX report one woman. ETV Bharat calls the victim a teenage girl. Her age is given differently, from a teenager to 24. We have left out her name and other details.
- How many were hurt: ETV Bharat’s first count was 10. Amar Ujala says 17. Jagran and NewsX say 19, and 20 in all if the dead woman is included. A local YouTube bulletin says 30, which no news report supports.
- The driver and alcohol: Amar Ujala quotes the additional superintendent of police saying a breath-analyser test confirmed the driver was drunk. NewsX says he was allegedly found heavily drunk. The ETV Bharat report we read does not mention alcohol, and a short video clip says a medical examination for drink was being arranged. No blood test result is reported.
- Which bus: one local report calls it a contract bus. The others say only that it was a roadways bus. No registration number is given.
- The day: Jagran and NewsX say Wednesday night in the text, but both were published on Tuesday evening. Amar Ujala and ETV Bharat say Tuesday.

What is not known
The depot’s assistant regional manager told Amar Ujala that officials are examining why an empty bus was on the road and where the driver was taking it. That is still unanswered. We do not know how a driver in that condition got hold of a bus, whether he was on duty, or whether he was checked before leaving. We found no report of the charges, of departmental action, or of what became of the seriously injured. The driver’s guilt has not been decided in court, and the account above is the police version as reported.
What you can do
- If a vehicle is being driven wildly near you, get off the carriageway at once, behind a wall, a pole or a shop front. Do not stand in its path or try to stop it. Once it has passed, call 112 and give the road, the nearest landmark, the direction it is heading and the vehicle number if you saw it.
- Help the injured the right way. Call 108, keep the person still and stop heavy bleeding with firm pressure. Our guides on first aid after a road accident and the golden hour after a crash set out the steps. See also how to call 112, 101 or 108.
- As a passenger, if you smell alcohol on a driver or he drives erratically, say so loudly, ask to get off and ring 112. Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act bars driving with more than 30 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood.
- Depots and transport bodies can run a breath test at the gate before every duty and keep a record of it, and can stop an empty or unscheduled bus from leaving without a supervisor’s sign-off. Whether Padrauna depot did either is part of what is being looked into.

- Injured go to a private hospital and the district hospital; serious cases are referred to BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur; senior officers visit
- The Padrauna depot says it is checking why the bus was empty and where it was going
- No report of charges, blood test result or depot action found at the time of checking
