What happened
A trailer and a Maruti Eeco van collided head-on near a petrol pump at Tharuadih, on the Hata-Pipraich road in the Hata Kotwali area of Kushinagar district, Uttar Pradesh, late on the night of Sunday, 1 November 2026. Reports put the time between about 11.30 pm (Bhaskar English) and about midnight (Jagran, Prabhat Khabar). The van was carrying people from one village in the Kaptanganj police station area who were coming home after a relative’s tilak ceremony at Devraj Pipra. Bhaskar English says eight people were in the van and that the impact “sounded like an explosion”. First checked on the morning of 2 November 2026; rechecked on 3 November 2026, when the toll was corrected to six. See the update below.
Bhaskar English says passers-by alerted the police, who cut the van’s doors open with gas cutters to bring out the trapped occupants. ETV Bharat says the police pulled them out with the help of local people. Jagran and Hindustan say hundreds of villagers reached the spot. The injured were taken to hospital and the bodies were sent for post-mortem. Several reports say the trailer driver ran away from the spot and the police were looking for him.
How many died: six, after an early report of seven
The toll changed through the morning, so here it is with the time of each report (IST, 2 November).
- Six dead: Amar Ujala (updated 7.18 am), Patrika (8.10 am), Prabhat Khabar (8.11 am) and Hindustan (about 9 am) report six dead. Amar Ujala, Patrika and Prabhat Khabar say one teenager was critically hurt; Hindustan says two were seriously injured.
- Seven dead: Bhaskar English (about 8.19 am, updated 9.54 am) reports seven dead and one seriously injured. ETV Bharat (8.39 am, updated 9.47 am) quotes the Hata station house officer: six died at the spot, and one of the two injured died during treatment, making seven. The other injured person was referred to BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur.
On the morning of 2 November we said seven dead and one critical, with the caution that an early report said six. That has since been corrected; see the update below.
Later on 2 November: Open magazine (updated 11.36 am) reports six dead and two critically injured, and quotes the Additional Superintendent of Police as saying that six of the eight people in the van died and that the two survivors were taken to BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur. The headlines of ANI and India TV also say six killed and two critical. That did not match the Hata station house officer’s account, reported earlier in the morning by ETV Bharat, of a seventh death in hospital. The Additional Superintendent’s figure, six, is the one the later reports follow; see the update below.
Who exactly was in the van, which of them died and how old they were is reported differently by different outlets, so we do not list the dead. They included members of one family from the same village; reports differ on how many (three according to Jagran and Prabhat Khabar, five according to ETV Bharat).
Update, 3 November 2026: six dead, two critical
Reports from 2 and 3 November put the toll at six, with two people critically injured, and not seven. The Additional Superintendent of Police, Kushinagar, told Amar Ujala that eight people were in the van, six died and two are being treated at BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur. The Times of India (3 November, 12.10 am) says six died and two were critically hurt, and Open magazine quoted the same officer on 2 November. Amar Ujala’s local report says all six were declared dead at the community health centre in Hata and that the two injured, both young brothers, were referred to Gorakhpur. The seventh death that ETV Bharat and Bhaskar English reported on the morning of 2 November is not repeated by any later report we opened, and ETV Bharat’s English report of 9.19 am that morning lists six dead and one critical. We therefore say six dead and two critical, and we have corrected the headline and the figures on this page.
The Times of India says all eight people in the van were male and from one village, Bhaluhi, in the Kaptanganj police station area, and that the van driver was among the dead. The dead include a father and two of his sons (Times of India, Amar Ujala). We do not list names. The ages of the two injured differ between reports, so we do not give them.
The Times of India also reports that the Superintendent of Police, Keshav Kumar, said the van driver was prima facie found to be drunk, and that the trailer driver has been traced and will be arrested soon. The Additional Superintendent, Siddharth Verma, said further legal action will follow once a written complaint is received. Both vehicles were seized. The van driver died in the crash, so the remark is about a man who cannot answer it, and it is preliminary. One outlet, Lalluram (2 November), says a relative of one of the dead has given the police a written complaint asking for a case; its details do not match other reports. No outlet we opened reported an FIR number or an arrest, and none had been reported when we checked around 12.30 pm on 3 November.
The time of the crash is given as about 11 pm (the Hata station house officer, via ETV Bharat), about 11.30 pm (the relative’s complaint, via Lalluram), about 12.30 am (Amar Ujala) and early Monday (Times of India). Amar Ujala’s local report adds that after hitting the van the trailer broke a large roadside tree and damaged a shed before it stopped; that is local reporting, not a police statement. The Chief Minister expressed grief and asked officials to see that the families get all help (Times of India), and the bodies reached the village on Monday evening after the post-mortem (Amar Ujala).
Last checked: 3 November 2026, around 12.30 pm IST.
Where the reports still differ
- Day: Bhaskar English says the crash was on Monday, but its report was published on Monday morning. ETV Bharat and Jagran say Sunday night, and that is what we use.
- Vehicles: a Maruti Eeco van and a trailer (Bhaskar English, Patrika, Amar Ujala). News18 and ABP Ganga call the van an Omni; ETV Bharat and Jagran say a car; ETV Bharat also says truck.
- The occasion: a tilak ceremony (Bhaskar English, ETV Bharat, Patrika, Amar Ujala) or a wedding party (Jagran). We follow the majority.
- People in the van: eight (Bhaskar English, Hindustan) or seven (Patrika).
- Hospital of the injured: the district hospital (Bhaskar English) or BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur (ETV Bharat).
What is still not known
The cause is not known. Jagran and Prabhat Khabar describe the trailer as speeding and out of control, and Bhaskar English says it veered off the road after the impact, but these are the outlets’ own words. No official finding has been reported. No official finding on the cause has been reported. Open magazine, quoting the Times of India, says the Kushinagar Superintendent of Police told the paper that the van driver was prima facie found to be under the influence of alcohol; Open calls this preliminary and says the exact circumstances are still under investigation. We have since opened the Times of India report of 3 November, which carries the same remark and adds that the van driver was among the dead; a preliminary remark about a driver who has died is not a finding of cause, so we do not suggest one. The police have said a case will be registered and investigated (ETV Bharat); we have not seen an FIR. Open also reports the Superintendent saying that the trailer driver, who had left the spot, has been traced and will be arrested soon. No arrest had been reported when we checked on 2 November, and none by 3 November; see the update above.
Live or work around Hata? Our Hata safety guide lists the emergency numbers and the main local risks.
Many family-function journeys end on highways at night. Read our guide: Night driving on Indian highways after functions.
The state of the road and the lighting at the spot, and the positions of the two vehicles before impact, are also not reported.
What families and drivers can do
The reports do not say what went wrong, so these are general points, not findings about this crash. Night travel on a two-lane road after a family function is common in villages, and the risk rises when the driver has been up since morning.
- Plan the return. Read our night driving safety plan, and think of an overnight stay or a rested second driver if the ceremony ends late. Our note on group trips and restraints covers seats and breaks.
- Use the seat belt. Every seat, front and back. Our related guide on helmet and seat belt use in India is listed below.
- If a crash happens, call for help first. The Motor Vehicles (Driving) Regulations, 2017 (regulation 29, major accidents) say that anyone involved should check for injured people, call medical help and the police at once, move the vehicle off the road if possible, and stay until the police arrive. Dial 112 for the police and 108 for an ambulance; which number to call explains both.
- Help the injured safely. Read road accident first aid; our guide on the Good Samaritan law is listed below. Under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ cashless treatment scheme, a road accident victim is entitled to treatment of up to Rs 1.5 lakh per person, as reported when it was notified in May 2025 (PTI).
- Keep a card with your family’s numbers. The emergency wallet card maker gives a printable card for the wallet or glove box.
