What happened on 5 November 2026
On the morning of Thursday, 5 November 2026, an Innova carrying pilgrims to Gangotri Dham went off the Gangotri National Highway at Gangnani in Bhatwari tehsil, Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, and fell down a deep gorge into the Bhagirathi river. The alert reached the district emergency centre at about 7 am (PTI) or 7.21 am (Devbhoomi Dialogue). Several reports put the spot about 20 metres past the Garam Kund (also written Dharmkund or Dharakund) hot-spring stretch at Gangnani, on the way towards Dabrani.
Seven people were in the car: six passengers from Gujarat and the driver (PTI, ETV Bharat). Four have been confirmed dead: three passengers and the driver. A 17-year-old boy was pulled out alive in critical condition, and two women are missing in the river. We have not named anyone.
The response
- First alert: police were alerted through the Delta control room channel; local police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and 108 ambulances reached the spot (ETV Bharat, Amrit Vichar). Maneri police and revenue officials were also there (Devbhoomi Dialogue, PTI).
- The gorge: rescuers went down on ropes and recovered four bodies from the riverbank (Amrit Vichar, Dainik Bhaskar). The India Daily describes the wrecked car as lying in the middle of the river.
- The survivor: the 17-year-old was brought up to the road. ETV Bharat’s 2.10 pm update says he was taken to the Bhatwari primary health centre and then airlifted to a higher medical centre. PTI and Gujarat First had earlier said an airlift was being arranged.
- The search: SDRF, water police and trained divers are searching the fast current for the two missing women. A 27-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team was sent from Maneri (Gujarat Samachar, Navjivan). Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya directed the operation (Navjivan) and Disaster Management Officer Shardul Gusain told Amrit Vichar that the final toll would be clear only after the rescue ends.
- Families: the district administration is trying to reach the families in Gujarat (Gujarat Samachar, Amrit Vichar). One Gujarati outlet, News Continuous, adds that identification, post-mortem and sending the bodies home are being coordinated with the Gujarat government. One outlet, Gujarat First, says Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief on social media.
What we know about how it fell
PTI says the car skidded off the road and plunged into the river. Gujarat First and Dainik Bhaskar say the driver lost control at a sharp bend. Eyewitnesses told The India Daily the car suddenly lost balance and went straight into the river. Police have started an inquiry; no official cause has been announced.
Where the reports differ, and what we do not know
- Home town: every report says Gujarat. Gujarat First and Dainik Bhaskar say Surat; ETV Bharat and Dainik Bhaskar add Surendranagar; PTI and several Gujarati outlets say the Sabarmati area of Ahmedabad. We give only the state.
- Depth of the fall: Gujarat First says about 300 metres, Dainik Bhaskar about 200 metres; the other reports say only a deep gorge. We use that wording.
- Missing: two women in PTI, ETV Bharat and most reports. One headline spoke of searching for three. Early reports gave only four dead and no missing count.
- Where the passengers came from: Dainik Bhaskar says the car had left a halt at Hina; other reports say only that it was going from Uttarkashi towards Gangotri.
- Not reported: any police case or named cause, the condition of the road and crash barrier at the spot, any compensation announcement, and whether the two women have been found. The latest report we found was ETV Bharat’s 2.10 pm update on 5 November, which says the search was still on.
What this case teaches
The reported time, about 7 am, is in daylight and well inside the daytime window that the Uttarakhand Transport Department’s Char Dham page recommends (no hill driving before 5 am or after 7 pm). So night driving is not the lesson here, and nobody has said the driver was tired or speeding. The reports give us only a car, a bend, a drop and a fast mountain river at the bottom. That is exactly why hill-highway crashes are so unforgiving: once a vehicle leaves the road there is usually no second chance, and when the river is at the bottom, even those who survive the fall can be swept away.
The Transport Department page (last updated 22 April 2026) gives plain rules for the pilgrimage roads: use the horn on curves and bends, avoid high speed because of steep grades and frequent curves, do not steer for more than eight hours a day, give way to the vehicle climbing uphill, check brakes, steering, tyres, oil, coolant and battery before a trip, and do not use a phone while driving. They are simple, and each one is something a passenger can ask a hired driver to follow.
This is also not the first time the stretch near Gangnani has made the news: an AIR News report of 20 August 2023 says a bus returning from Gangotri fell into a gorge there, with 7 dead and 28 injured. For similar hill-gorge cases on our site, see the Devprayag gorge crash near Pali, the Tyuni hill-road crash and the Kiratpur Sahib gorge crash. Our guides Night travel in shared tempos and on hill highways, Driving hill roads in red-alert rain and Night driving safety in India explain more about hill routes.
What pilgrims, hired-cab passengers and drivers can do
- Before you leave: check the weather and road status for the day, plan halts so the day’s drive is not rushed, and tell the driver you would rather arrive late than hurry. Keep to daylight on hill roads.
- In a hired car: note the driver’s name and phone number and the vehicle details in a message to a family member, and share your live location. Sit with the seat belt on in every seat, including the back.
- Driver and passengers on bends: horn on every blind bend, low gear going down, no overtaking on a curve, and let the uphill vehicle go first. If the driver is speeding, say so and ask for a halt.
- Before the vehicle moves: check brakes, tyres and steering, and do not drive if tired. Switch drivers or stop for tea every couple of hours.
- If a vehicle goes into a gorge or river: do not climb down alone on loose ground or wade in a fast current. Call 112, and in Uttarakhand also the State Emergency Operation Centre on 1070 or the district emergency centre on 1077 (USDMA). Say the highway, the nearest village or landmark and what you can see.
- Everyone: Emergency numbers in India and How to call 112, 101 or 108 explain which number to call and what to say, and The golden hour after a road crash explains why the first hour matters.
We do not yet have a city safety guide for Uttarkashi. Our nearest guides, Dehradun and Rishikesh, are many kilometres from Gangnani and do not cover it. We will link a guide once one is live.

- Four are reported dead, one 17-year-old was rescued in critical condition and two women are reported missing.

- Police, SDRF, NDRF, 108 ambulances, water police and divers responded; rescuers recovered four bodies from the riverbank using ropes.
- No police case, crash-barrier or road-condition detail, compensation or later update was found.
Failures and risk multipliers
- No official finding exists. What the reports raise as questions:
- The car is reported to have lost control or skidded at a bend, but the cause (speed, a road or vehicle fault, a mistake by the driver) has not been given.
- No report says whether a crash barrier was present, damaged or too low at the spot.
- The fall ended in a fast river, which made recovery and the search for the two missing women harder.
- These are reports and questions, not findings of fault.
Actions that reduce risk
- Before a pilgrimage drive: check weather and road status, plan halts, keep to daylight, and do not hurry.
- Passengers in hired cars: share the driver's details and live location with family, wear a seat belt in every seat and ask the driver to slow down on bends.
- Drivers: horn on every bend, low gear downhill, no overtaking on a curve, give way to uphill traffic, rest every few hours.
- If a vehicle falls into a gorge or river: call 112, the State Emergency Operation Centre 1070 or the district centre 1077; do not climb down alone.
