Reports gave the number in serious condition as 10 (Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala and others) or 6 (Lalluram, IBC24, Punjab Kesari MP). We have not named anyone.
No report we opened says that anyone died. We cannot say that no one has died: the latest reports we found are from the evening of 4 November, and some of the injured were being prepared for transfer to a medical college.
The response
- Police: Beohari police reached the spot and started relief and rescue work. Passengers who were trapped inside the bus were pulled out with the help of local people (Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala).
- Taking the injured to hospital: the injured were taken to the Beohari hospital in private vehicles, police vehicles and ambulances (Amar Ujala, Dainik Jagran). Lalluram says all were taken to the civil hospital at Beohari.

- Officials: police officers visited the hospital to review treatment. The Beohari police station in-charge told Lalluram that the bus of Deepak Bus Service hit a truck standing near Tihki turn, that more than 30 passengers were hurt and that legal action was under way.
What the reports say about how it happened
Police told reporters that the bus, which belongs to a private operator (reported as Deepak company or Deepak Bus Service), was going from Shahdol to Beohari when it hit the rear of a goods vehicle standing at the roadside near the Tihki passenger waiting shed. Several reports say the driver did not see the vehicle in time and that the bus was moving fast. Reports say the passengers sitting in the front seats were the most badly hurt (MP Breaking News, Royal Bulletin). Police are investigating whether driver negligence, poor visibility or the position of the standing vehicle caused the crash (Dainik Jagran). No official cause has been announced.
Where the reports differ, and what we do not know
- Serious injuries: 10 in Dainik Jagran, Amar Ujala, MP Breaking News, Royal Bulletin and People’s Update; 6 in Lalluram, IBC24 and Punjab Kesari MP. We show both.
- Number injured: about 30 in most reports and “more than 30” in others.
- The standing vehicle: called a truck in most reports and a goods vehicle in some. Nobody has said whether it was loaded, broken down or parked, whether its hazard lights or reflectors were on, or how far it stood onto the carriageway.
- Time: every report says morning. We did not find an exact time, so we do not give one.
- Not reported: any death, any case against the driver or the operator, the bus speed, the driver’s condition, fitness and permit details of the bus, the identity of the standing truck’s owner, and how many children were hurt. The latest report we found was published on the evening of 4 November; we found nothing from 5 November.
What this case teaches
Hitting the back of a standing vehicle is one of the most avoidable kinds of highway crash, and the people at the front of a bus take the worst of it. Two things have to go right to prevent it: the driver must see the vehicle early enough to slow down, and the vehicle at the roadside must be easy to see and must not stand on the road at all. Both matter more on a two-lane state road such as the Shahdol-Rewa stretch, where there is no hard shoulder to speak of and a bus is often running a tight schedule.
We have written about the same pattern before: a bus that hit a parked truck on NH-27 near Supaul and a bus that rammed a broken-down truck on NH-130 at Simga. Reports of the Shahdol crash mention school children among the injured, as in the Rohta school-bus overturn in Meerut. Our guides Night driving safety in India, Driving home at night after a family function and Safety in buses, trains and metros cover the habits that help.
What drivers, bus passengers and parents can do
- If you stop a truck or any vehicle: take it fully off the carriageway whenever you can, switch on the hazard lights, place a warning triangle or leafy branch well behind it, and do not leave a vehicle standing near a bend, a bus shed or a junction.
- Bus drivers: keep a long gap, slow down when you see a vehicle at the roadside or near a bus stop, and do not run late at the cost of speed. Keep the phone away and your eyes on the road.
- Passengers: if the bus is speeding, ask the driver to slow down or tell the conductor; wear a seat belt where one is fitted, and if you have a choice, do not sit in the first row.
- Parents of school-going children: teach children to hold on to the seat in front and not to sit at the very front of a public bus. Save the number of the school or the local police station on your phone.
- If a crash happens: call 112 or 108, give the road name and the nearest landmark, switch off the engine, and do not pull trapped people out unless there is a fire or another danger. The golden hour after a road crash, Emergency numbers in India and How to call 112, 101 or 108 explain what to say, and Road crash safety for drivers and passengers explains what to do until help comes.

Failures and risk multipliers
- No official finding exists. What the reports raise as questions:
- The bus driver is reported not to have seen a truck standing at the roadside in time, and the bus is reported to have been moving fast.
- It is not reported whether the truck was parked on the carriageway, whether its hazard lights or reflectors were on, or why it was standing near a bus shed.
- The people sitting in the front rows of the bus were the most badly hurt.
- These are reports and questions, not findings of fault.
Actions that reduce risk
- Anyone stopping a vehicle on a highway: go fully off the carriageway, hazard lights on, a warning triangle some distance behind, never near a bend or bus stop.
- Bus drivers: keep a long gap, slow down near roadside vehicles and bus stops, no phone.
- Passengers: ask a fast driver to slow down, wear a seat belt where fitted and avoid the first row if you can.
- After a crash: call 112 or 108, give the road and landmark, and do not move trapped people unless there is fire or other danger.
