Only by place and timing. The August fire at another Tarapith hotel killed eight to nine pilgrims. No report links the two.

What should a guest do at a lodge?

Find the nearest staircase when you arrive, sleep with the door closed, and call 101 or 112 early if you smell smoke.

What happened

A fire broke out in room 201 of a large private lodge on the Rampurhat to Tarapith road in Birbhum, West Bengal, early on Tuesday, 27 October 2026. A police officer at Rampurhat said the call came at 3.51 am. Police and a fire engine reached the spot in about five minutes, and 12 guests were brought out. Nobody was reported hurt. Black smoke spread into other rooms, and the fire is said to have started on a bed in the room. Updated 27 October 2026.

Some reports name the place as the Gods County lodge. Others just say a large hotel by the road. The management is reported to have declined to speak to the press in one account, while another says it told reporters that no resident was harmed. We have no statement from the lodge itself.

Two months after the August fire

Tarapith has been through this before. On 17 August 2026 a fire at a hotel near the Tarapith temple killed eight to nine pilgrims, depending on the report, and some guests alleged that a rear exit was shut. After that, the district administration ordered a fire-safety audit of hotels and lodges in the town, and notices went out to many of them. We have not published a separate case on the August fire, so we do not link one here. This second fire did not repeat the loss of life, and it is too early to say what, if anything, it shows about the lodge’s own arrangements.

Could it have gone beyond control? What the facts show

This was a night fire in a large pilgrim lodge, so we look at what the reports say and stop there.

  • Time of day: just before 4 am, when most guests would have been asleep.
  • Where it started: a bed in room 201. Reports differ on whether that is the first or second floor above the ground, so we do not give a floor.
  • Smoke: black smoke filled other rooms and part of the building, and guests were reported to have rushed downstairs in panic.
  • People: 12 guests were brought out, a figure that appears in one report only. Another says tourists and staff were taken out. All were reported safe.
  • Response: about five minutes from the 3.51 am call to police and one fire engine on the spot. One report says the fire engine needed a prolonged effort to bring the fire under control. The time of control is not stated.
  • Exits, alarms, sprinklers: no report says which stairs or doors were used, or whether an alarm sounded.
  • Follow-up: the fire department has started a check on how the fire began and, according to two reports, on whether the lodge’s fire-safety arrangements were adequate.

So the record shows a bed fire in one room, smoke reaching other rooms, a fast response and everyone out. It does not show how close the fire came to spreading further, and we will not guess.

What is still not known

The cause is not established. Officials are checking an electrical short circuit and other possibilities, and one account says the fire department’s report will settle it. We do not know how large the damage is, how many rooms were occupied, whether alarms worked, or whether the lodge had a valid fire licence. The floor of room 201 is reported differently, and the lodge name rests on a few reports. Checked 27 October 2026.

What a guest can do

When you check in at any lodge, whether in Tarapith or elsewhere, walk from your room to the nearest staircase before you unpack, try the stair door to see that it opens, and count the doors between your room and it so you can find it in the dark.

  1. A fire at a Tarapith hotel kills eight to nine pilgrims; district administration orders a fire-safety audit of Tarapith lodges and issues notices
  2. Rampurhat police get the call about a fire in room 201 of a lodge on the Rampurhat to Tarapith road
  3. Police and a fire engine reach the lodge; guests are brought out
  4. Fire is brought under control; no casualty reported
  5. Reports at 9.44 am and 10.29 am IST say the fire department has begun checking the cause and the fire-safety arrangements

Why consequences escalated

  • A fire started on a bed in room 201 of a large lodge just before 4 am.
  • Police and one fire engine arrived in about five minutes and the fire was brought under control.
  • 12 guests were brought out (one report) and no injuries were reported.
  • Black smoke reached other rooms.
  • The cause, the damage and the state of alarms and exits are not stated.

Failures and risk multipliers

  • Cause not established; a short circuit is only one possibility being checked.
  • Nothing is reported on alarms, sprinklers or which exits were used.
  • Smoke spread to other rooms from a single-room fire.
  • The lodge has not made a public statement on its fire-safety arrangements.

Actions that reduce risk

  1. Walk to the nearest staircase when you check in and see that the door opens.
  2. Sleep with the door closed and keep phone, key and shoes within reach.
  3. If there is smoke outside, keep low, use a wet cloth over the face and take the stairs.
  4. Call 101 or 112 early with the lodge name and room number.
  5. Lodge owners: test alarms, keep every exit unlocked and publish the fire department's findings to guests when they are made.

Survival sequence

  1. Know your exit before you sleep, and count the doors between your room and the stairs.
  2. Keep the room door shut at night.
  3. If there is smoke, stay low, cover your nose and mouth with a wet cloth and use the stairs, not the lift.
  4. If the corridor is blocked, stay in the room, seal the door gaps with wet towels and call 101 or 112.
  5. Go to the open space outside and do not return for belongings.

  • The lodge name is given in three of four reports; the fourth does not name it.
  • Whether the lodge management spoke to the press is reported both ways.
  • The cause, the damage and the state of alarms and exits are not stated.
  • The August 2026 toll is eight in some reports and nine in others.
  • The exact lodge location was not found; the map point is the Tarapith town centre.
  • No public video of the fire was found, so none is listed.
