What happened

On the afternoon of Sunday, 18 January 2026, a bus packed with villagers from Balrampur district in Chhattisgarh overturned on the steep Orsa (Orsa Bangladara) ghati, under Mahuadanr police station in Latehar district, Jharkhand, close to the Chhattisgarh border. The passengers were going to Lodh village near Mahuadanr for a pre-wedding ritual at a family home. Prabhat Khabar called it a chheka; other reports called it an engagement or a lota pani ceremony. Prabhat Khabar put the time at about 3 p.m.

According to IANS, eyewitnesses said the driver lost control on a sharp bend on the downhill slope. The bus hit the roadside guard rail, struck a tree and fell about 20 feet into the gorge, trapping people inside. The driver, Vikas Pathak, survived. He told reporters, as quoted by PTI, that the brakes failed and that he tried the handbrake and switched off the engine but could not stop the bus.

The bus was far over its capacity. Reports put the number on board at 86 (NPG News), about 87 (IANS, The Statesman), around 90 (the driver, quoted by PTI) and more than 90 (Prabhat Khabar, ETV Bharat). Prabhat Khabar and Amar Ujala said it had 52 seats; ETV Bharat said 45. Prabhat Khabar, Amar Ujala, ETV Bharat and The Statesman reported that it was a school bus, and Prabhat Khabar said it was registered in the name of a private school; we are not naming it because no official finding has been published. Other reports simply called it a private or reserved bus.

The people

Ten people died, all from Balrampur district. SDM Vipin Kumar Dubey confirmed the figure of ten on 19 January (ETV Bharat, UNI), and the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister’s compensation announcement was made for ten dead. Five died at the spot and five later in hospital. PTI reported two deaths at Latehar hospital and two people brought dead to Gumla Sadar hospital, and Patrika reported that Parshuram Sonwani died at a mission hospital after being referred towards Ambikapur Medical College. Most passengers came from Piparsot village.

The SDM’s list, as published by ETV Bharat and Lagatar, names Sitapati Devi, Prema Devi, Sonamati Devi, Reshanti Cherwa, Sukhna Bhuiyan, Vijay Nagesia, Lilawati Sonwani, Ramesh Manika, Phagua Ram and Parshuram Sonwani. Spellings and surnames differ in earlier PTI and Patrika lists. Reports also differ on how many were women: four women and six men according to the SDM (ETV Bharat, UNI), five women according to Chhattisgarh officials (ETV Bharat English) and Patrika.

Early IANS reports, quoting police, said five people had died, four men and one woman. The SP, quoting the same first five deaths, told PTI that four were women. The toll then rose to seven, nine and finally ten.

More than 80 people were hurt. The Chhattisgarh Chief Minister gave a figure of 87 injured: 27 at Carmel Hospital and 60 at the Mahuadanr Community Health Centre. SDM Dubey told PTI that 60 were at the health centre, more than 20 at a private hospital, and 32 serious patients were being referred to RIMS, Ranchi. Prabhat Khabar reported more than 82 injured and Pradesh Today 78. Injured people were also sent to Gumla and Latehar.

Response and investigation

Villagers began pulling people out before help arrived. SDM Dubey called in health teams and ambulances from Mahuadanr, Garu, Netarhat, Latehar and Gumla, and from the Chhattisgarh side of the border. ETV Bharat reported that more than 25 ambulances reached within an hour. Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren asked the Latehar deputy commissioner on X to provide proper treatment for the injured. The bodies were taken back to Balrampur after post-mortem on 19 January, NPG News reported.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced ₹5 lakh for the family of each of the ten dead and ₹50,000 for each injured person, over and above the immediate relief and insurance money from the administration.

Police seized the bus and began looking into the role of the driver, the bus owner and the organisers, Amar Ujala and Prabhat Khabar reported; the administration ordered an inquiry. Prabhat Khabar pointed out that the overloaded bus had covered about 40 km through the Balrampur, Kusmi, Samri and Mahuadanr police station areas without being stopped. The Statesman quoted Chhattisgarh RTO chief D Ravishankar as saying that using a school bus for a private function is illegal and that a detailed inquiry would follow.

The cause has not been officially settled. The driver blamed brake failure. Eyewitnesses spoke of a sharp bend on a steep slope. The president of the local sarpanch association told ETV Bharat that the road itself was badly designed, with a slope of about 30 degrees where it should not exceed 15; this is his allegation, not an official finding.

When we checked on 16 October 2026, nine months on, we could not find any published report of FIR details or charges, an arrest, a fitness or permit finding on the bus, action by the transport department, payment of the announced compensation, or any death after the tenth.

Why this matters

In villages, a family function often means one hired bus and everyone who can squeeze in. On a flat road an overloaded bus is risky. On a long, steep ghat it is far worse: the extra weight makes the brakes work harder and heat up, and once they fade the driver has very few ways left to stop. When such a bus overturns, people standing in the aisle or packed in the doorway are thrown on top of each other.

NCRB’s Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India 2024 counted 4,903 bus travellers killed in road accidents that year. Police recorded 1,851 deaths under defects in the mechanical condition of vehicles and 910 under lack of road infrastructure.

Lessons for families, operators and drivers

  • Count heads before you leave. If the bus has 52 seats, 52 people travel. Book a second vehicle for the rest. Nobody should stand for a ghat journey.
  • Hire a bus that has a permit for passengers. A school bus is meant for children going to school. Ask for the permit and fitness certificate, and check that the vehicle is meant for hire.
  • Use a low gear going downhill. On a long descent, the driver should come down in a low gear and use the engine to hold the speed, braking in short spells. Riding the brakes all the way makes them overheat and fail.
  • Stop and cool off on long ghats. If the brakes smell hot or feel soft, pull over at the next safe spot and let them cool. Do not keep going.
  • Police and transport checks matter. An overloaded bus crossing several police station areas without a single check is a gap that district officials on both sides of a border can close.

What to do after a bus overturns

  • Check yourself first, then the people near you. Get out through the door, the emergency exit or a window if the bus is on its side.
  • Move well away from the bus and off the road, especially on a bend.
  • Call 112, or 108 for an ambulance. Give the ghat name, the nearest village and which side of the border you are on.
  • Do not drag out someone who cannot move unless there is fire or another immediate danger; you could make a neck or spine injury worse.
  • Note the bus number and the name of the person who hired it. Families will need these for compensation and insurance claims.

What is still not known

The official cause, the condition of the bus’s brakes, whether its fitness and permit papers were valid, who allowed a school bus to be used for a private function, the FIR sections and whether anyone was charged, the exact number of people on board and injured, and whether the announced compensation has reached the families have not been published in any report we could find. We will update this page when official findings appear.

  1. Bus overturns on the Orsa ghati and falls about 20 feet; five die at the spot
  2. Villagers, police and health teams pull out the injured; ambulances called from Garu, Netarhat, Latehar, Gumla and Chhattisgarh
  3. 32 serious patients referred to RIMS Ranchi; Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren directs the Latehar DC to ensure treatment
  4. Toll rises to seven, then nine, as patients die at Latehar and Gumla hospitals
  5. SDM confirms ten dead; bodies taken to Balrampur after post-mortem
  6. Chhattisgarh CM announces Rs 5 lakh per deceased and Rs 50,000 per injured; RTO chief says a school bus cannot be used for a private function
  7. No FIR details, arrest, cause finding, compensation payment report or later death located

Why consequences escalated

  • Ten people died, five at the spot and five in hospital, according to the Mahuadanr SDM.
  • The bus was carrying far more people than it had seats for; reports put the load at 86 to more than 90.
  • Several reports said it was a school bus hired for a private family function.
  • The driver said the brakes failed on the downhill slope; this has not been officially confirmed.
  • The bus reportedly crossed about 40 km and four police station areas without being checked.
  • A local sarpanch leader alleged the ghat road is too steep; this is an allegation, not a finding.

Failures and risk multipliers

  • Putting 86 to 90 people in a bus with about 52 seats.
  • Using a school bus for a private function, which the Chhattisgarh RTO chief called illegal.
  • Descending a steep ghat with a heavily overloaded bus.
  • No police or transport check stopped the overloaded bus along the way.

Actions that reduce risk

  1. Families: hire one seat per person and book a second vehicle rather than overload one bus.
  2. Bus owners and schools: never hire out a school bus for private functions.
  3. Drivers: use a low gear on long descents and stop to let hot brakes cool.
  4. Police and transport officials: check overloaded buses at border and ghat approaches.
  5. Road authorities: review gradients, crash barriers and warning signs on the Orsa ghati.

The broader evidence

Survival sequence

  1. Take a seat, not standing room; if the bus is full, wait for the next vehicle.
  2. On a steep descent, if you smell hot brakes, ask the driver to stop and let them cool.
  3. If the bus starts to tip, hold the seat in front, keep your head down and stay away from windows.
  4. After a rollover, get out through the door, emergency exit or a window, move away from the road and call 112 or 108.

Limitations

  • The cause of the crash has not been officially established; brake failure is the driver's account and the road-gradient claim is a local leader's allegation.
  • Reports differ on the number on board, the number of seats, the number injured, the number of women among the dead and the spelling of names.
  • NCRB causes are recorded by police at the time; mechanical defects such as brake failure may be under-counted or recorded under other causes.
  • NCRB ADSI 2024 is the latest edition used and does not cover 2026.
