What happened

Around midnight on the night of Lakshmi Puja, 25 to 26 October 2026, a fire broke out in a parked bus at the Midnapore (Medinipur) Central Bus Stand in Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal. Uttarbanga Sambad puts the time at about 12.30 am on Monday; ETV Bharat Bangla and IndiaHood say about midnight. The fire spread to the buses parked beside it. Three buses were burnt. Uttarbanga Sambad says two were destroyed and one was partly damaged; ETV Bharat Bangla says police confirmed three buses; the other reports say only that three were burnt. No death or injury has been reported. Updated 26 October 2026.

The stand was nearly empty and quiet at that hour (Uttarbanga Sambad). None of the reports says whether anyone was inside the buses. Residents who were up for the puja saw flames and thick smoke and shouted for help; ETV Bharat Bangla quotes one resident who filmed the fire. Locals tried to put it out with water and sand before the fire brigade arrived. The first reports, including the live feed we follow, spoke of two buses; the detailed reports say three.

Why it could have been worse

This is a public bus stand where many long-distance and local buses stand in rows overnight. ETV Bharat Bangla and IndiaHood note what is close by: an electric pole right beside the burning buses, a row of lodges, the bungalows of the Superintendent of Police and the district health officer, and many more parked buses. Residents told ETV Bharat that it was lucky the fire did not reach the pole. This is the reporters’ and residents’ view, not an official statement; no fire officer has been quoted saying how close it came. It is also a reminder that buses nobody is watching at midnight, a festival night with fewer staff around, can burn for a long time before anyone with an extinguisher arrives.

The fire response

One fire engine from the Midnapore fire station reached the spot quickly (Uttarbanga Sambad). ETV Bharat Bangla and IndiaHood say the first engine could not control the fire alone and a second was sent. Firefighters needed about an hour to bring it under control; one passage of the IndiaHood report speaks of about two hours, so we say about one to two hours. Police of Medinipur Kotwali police station reached the spot and began an inquiry. No official has been quoted by name in the reports we opened.

Cause and inquiry

No official finding has been announced. Police told ETV Bharat Bangla that their preliminary assumption is a short circuit, and said the fire seemed to rise from below the bus rather than fall from the roof. Uttarbanga Sambad says fire officials suspect a short circuit but that sabotage or another cause has not been ruled out until a detailed investigation. We found no report of an FIR, an arrest, a loss figure or the names of the bus owners and routes. ETV Bharat and IndiaHood also recall an earlier late-night fire at the same bus stand, in front of the LIC building, that destroyed cloth shops just before Durga Puja. Both reports link that fire to a short circuit as well, but give no year.

Why this matters

A bus stand is a high-consequence place even when nobody is hurt. Diesel buses stand close together, drivers and conductors go home or sleep elsewhere, and the area fills with passengers by early morning. We saw the same pattern at the Bhopal ISBT, where 7 to 8 parked buses were hit, and in the Mumbai Anik bus depot fire, where 12 buses were destroyed. The Danilimda police station fire in Ahmedabad and the Lucknow EV showroom fire show how a spark in one vehicle becomes a row of burnt ones. Here the buses were empty and no one was hurt; with passengers waiting or sleeping in the buses, the result could have been very different, and that is a reading of the situation, not a statement from the officials.

Lessons for readers

  • Bus stand managers and operators: keep a gap between parked buses, enough for a fire engine and for one bus to be driven out. Keep poles, transformers and cables away from the parking bays or protected.
  • Keep a watchman and a working extinguisher at night. A fire caught in the first minutes can be stopped or one bus can be moved; here local residents used water and sand.
  • Check bus wiring and batteries at every service. Loose cables and add-on lights or music systems are common starting points. See our note on small electrical faults that cause big fires.
  • Residents and passengers: if you see fire at a bus stand, call 101 or 112 at once and give the stand name; do not go close to put it out or to film. Our emergency numbers guide explains which number to call.
  • Authorities: know how long the nearest fire engine takes to reach the stand at night; see fire response distance in India.
  • If someone is burnt, cool the burn under running water for 20 minutes and go to a hospital. See our first aid guide.

What is still not known

The cause is not established; a short circuit is the police and fire officials’ first guess. We do not know whether an FIR was registered, who owns the buses, what the loss is, or whether anyone was sleeping inside. The number destroyed (two or three) differs between reports. Reports give no information on the stand’s fire arrangements or fire clearance. We will update this page when police or the fire service give a finding. Last checked 26 October 2026, 1 pm IST. West Bengal’s Midnapore is not covered by one of our city safety guides yet; a Medinipur guide is planned.

  1. Lakshmi Puja night; Midnapore Central Bus Stand nearly empty
  2. Residents see flames and thick smoke from a parked bus; fire spreads to buses beside it
  3. Locals try water and sand; first fire engine arrives, a second follows; Kotwali police reach the spot
  4. Fire brought under control after about one hour (up to two hours in one report)
  5. ETV Bharat Bangla (8.42 am) and Aajkaal (9.16 am) report three buses burnt; police say short circuit is the preliminary assumption
  6. Cause still unannounced; no FIR, arrest or loss figure found

Why consequences escalated

  • A fire in one parked bus at a public bus stand spread to the buses beside it and burnt three.
  • The stand was nearly empty at midnight on a festival night; no one was reported hurt.
  • Police and fire officials' first guess is a short circuit; no official finding yet.
  • An electric pole, lodges and other parked buses were close to the burning buses.
  • Locals used water and sand before two fire engines took about an hour to control it.

Failures and risk multipliers

  • Buses parked close together in rows overnight, so fire passed from bus to bus (reported).
  • An electric pole and other buses stood next to the burning buses; residents said it was luck that the pole did not catch.
  • No night staff or fire extinguisher is mentioned; locals fought the fire with water and sand.
  • The first engine could not control the fire alone and a second was called (ETV Bharat Bangla, IndiaHood).
  • A past late-night fire at the same stand destroyed cloth shops (ETV Bharat, IndiaHood); a repeat hazard that reports link to a short circuit.

Actions that reduce risk

  1. Leave a gap between parked buses and keep poles, cables and fuel away from the bays.
  2. Keep a watchman and a working extinguisher at the stand at night.
  3. Check bus wiring, batteries and add-on circuits at every service.
  4. If you see fire at a stand, call 101 or 112, give the stand name and keep away.
  5. Authorities: record the real night fire-engine response time to the stand and review fire clearance.

Survival sequence

  1. If you see smoke or flames at a parked bus, move away at once and keep clear of other buses and electric poles.
  2. Do not go back for luggage or stop to record a video.
  3. Call 101 or 112 and give the bus stand name.
  4. Operators: move other buses out only if it is safe and a trained person is present.
  5. If someone is burnt, cool the burn under running water for 20 minutes and take them to a hospital.

  • No official has been quoted by name; the cause is a preliminary assumption.
  • No FIR, loss figure or bus owner details were found.
  • It is not stated whether anyone was inside the buses.
  • The Aajkaal article body could not be read; only its headline and date were used.
  • The map point is the OpenStreetMap bus-station point; the exact bay is not mapped.
