Parked bus fires at the Central Bus Stand

On the night of 25 to 26 October 2026, a fire in one parked bus at the Central Bus Stand spread to the buses beside it and burnt three, with no death or injury reported; police and fire officials suspect a short circuit. An electric pole, lodges and other buses were close by and a second fire engine had to be called, as we cover in a case study.

Town flooding after heavy rain

On 16 September 2021, heavy rain in West Midnapore district sent water into houses in Midnapore and damaged property. A report nine days later described people using boats on waterlogged streets in the western part of the city.

Flooded State Highway 7

In the same September 2021 floods, State Highway 7 went under water. Some truck and bus drivers drove through it despite police warnings, which is exactly what you should not do.

Lightning in the district

In late April 2023, three people died from lightning in Paschim Medinipur district on a day when 14 died across West Bengal. Officials said most of the victims were farmers working in open fields.
