What happened
A major fire broke out at the Sunday Market in Vasco da Gama, South Goa, on the night of Wednesday, 28 October 2026. The market is behind the Mormugao Municipal Council building and falls under the municipality. The Navhind Times puts the start at about 11.10 pm; Herald Goa says the fire was reported at 11.40 pm. Both say the cause was not known when they went to press. Herald Goa says nine fire tenders came from Vasco, Margao, Panjim, Verna, Ponda and Old Goa, and that narrow access routes crowded with makeshift shops made it hard to reach the burning stalls. It adds that the fire also affected the first floor of the Sunday Market building. Checked on the morning of 29 October 2026.
Herald Goa says the market had around 60 to 70 stalls, mostly selling readymade garments stocked for Diwali, and that the exact number destroyed was not known. The Navhind Times says shops are thickly clustered and sell clothes, bags, utensils and shoes, and that vendors put their combined stock at crores of rupees. The Chief Minister, the South Goa Collector and local MLAs went to the site. No casualties were reported in any of the fires that night.
The earlier fires that night
The market fire was not the first of the night. Herald Goa says a car accessories and auto parts shop near the Tilak Maidan stadium was gutted and cars parked nearby were damaged. The shop owner told the paper he found it burning when he called his worker at about 8 pm. The Navhind Times says that fire was about an hour before the market fire and about 1 km away, and that two vehicles were damaged. Both say a short circuit was suspected there. Herald Goa also mentions a house fire at New Vaddem, making it the third fire in the town within a few hours, and says firefighters had barely got back to the Vasco fire station when the market alert came.
Entry barred near the market
On 29 October the South Goa Collector barred public entry into the fire-affected premises of the New Modern Municipal Market in Vasco and the area within 50 metres, citing structural and fire hazards. The order is under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and runs until 1 November 2026 unless extended, Herald Goa reports.
Where the reports differ
- Start time: about 11.10 pm (Navhind Times) or 11.40 pm (Herald Goa).
- Number of stalls: Herald Goa says the market had around 60 to 70 stalls and the number destroyed was not known. The Chief Minister, quoted by ANI, said more than 150 vendors used to set up stalls in the market, and that there are shops there as well. That is a count of vendors, not of stalls destroyed. A Marathi headline we saw, not opened, gives another figure. We give none as a final count.
- Earlier shop fire: found burning at about 8 pm (Herald Goa) or about an hour before the market fire (Navhind Times).
- Cause: a short circuit was suspected for the fires by Herald Goa and for the car accessories shop by the Navhind Times. For the market, the cause was not ascertained.
What is not known
The cause of the market fire, the number of stalls destroyed, the money loss (vendors say crores; no official figure) and whether the market had working hydrants, extinguishers and a fire safety certificate are all unknown. Herald Goa reports that some vendors raised suspicion of foul play; the Chief Minister asked the police to find the exact cause and a minister said the police would investigate if complaints came. That is a suspicion, not a finding.

The same minister said the fire exposed shortcomings, mainly in access, that the government would look at.
What traders and market bodies can do
The reports do not say what failed, so these are general points. A weekly or municipal market with closely packed makeshift stalls carries a lot of festival stock and cheap wiring, and a narrow lane stops tenders.
- Keep lanes clear. Leave a lane wide enough for a fire tender and keep cartons and stock out of it. A fire that cannot be reached spreads along the row.
- Check wiring and lights. Festival lights, extension boards and hanging wires are a common start; read whether a short circuit can cause a fire and switch off the main supply when stalls close.
- Keep gas out of the rows. Cylinders at food stalls should be upright, in the open and away from cloth and stock. See what to do in an LPG gas leak.
- Keep extinguishers and working hydrants. The fire extinguisher chooser helps pick the right type, and the PASS method is easy to remember. Municipal markets should test their hydrants and show the record.
- Ask for the fire NOC and an inspection. A municipal or private market should keep the fire department’s certificate and inspection record where traders can see it.
- Call early. Dial 101 or 112 as soon as you see flames; our guide to the fire brigade number in India says what to tell the control room.
