Local risks in Vasco da Gama (Mormugao)

Sunday Market fire, October 2026

Around 11.10 pm on 28 October 2026 a big fire broke out in the Sunday Market behind the Mormugao Municipal Council building, a lane-packed market of hundreds of small shops. Fire tenders came from Vasco and other places, the cause had not been established, and an earlier fire the same evening gutted a car accessories shop near Tilak Maidan; we cover the market fire in a case study.

A hydrant with no water

In February 2025 a fire at the same market destroyed a clothing shop and a shoe shop, and the hydrant a few metres away had no water. A second tender had to be called, and a short circuit was believed to be the likely cause.

Scrapyard and industrial fires

In November 2025 a scrapyard at Zuari Nagar burned for hours and needed units from Vasco, Verna, Margao and Panaji, along with the Goa Shipyard, the Mormugao Port Authority and Paradip Phosphate. A short circuit was suspected, and nobody was reported hurt.

Port pipelines

In 1999 three pipelines carrying petrol, diesel and sulphuric acid caught fire near the main gate of the oil terminal in the Vasco port area, with no deaths reported. Fuel lines and chemicals sit close to town, so a leak or fire there is not only a port matter.

Hill-slope landslides and waterlogging

In March 2026 the Mormugao Municipal Council asked residents of slope areas such as Bogda, Desterro, Upper Jetty, Sada, Vaddem and Mangor Hill to move to safer places before the monsoon. Boulders and heavy rain on these slopes have damaged houses before.
