The cause is not established. It fell during shuttering removal; whether it was too early, in the wrong order or without supervision is not reported.

What happened

Two men died on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, when the slab and staircase of a basement collapsed at an under-construction house in the Gangaghat police area of Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh. Workers were taking off the shuttering (the temporary wooden or steel moulds that hold fresh concrete in place) when the slab and the debris of the staircase came down on them. A third worker was reported hurt in some accounts. Checked 29 October 2026.

The house stands on Azad Marg in the Royal City area, under the Ghonghi Rautapur gram panchayat, on the Kanpur side of Unnao. Police, fire and SDRF teams reached the spot. A news agency report says rescuers had to cut iron rods and break the concrete slab to reach the two men, with the sub-divisional magistrate and an additional superintendent of police supervising. One report says doctors declared both men dead at hospital; the bodies then went for post-mortem.

Where the reports disagree

  • Who the dead were: the news agency calls them two labourers, from Kanpur and Fatehpur districts. A Hindi daily describes them as a contractor and a worker and says they are believed to be relatives. We have written “two men”.
  • The time: police are said to have got the call between about 12.15 and 12.30 pm in two reports, but the news agency says about 1.45 pm. We have not picked one.
  • The injured: the news agency says one person, the father of one of the dead, is under treatment. The Hindi daily says one worker, aged 54, is seriously hurt and in the district hospital. A third report mentions no injured. We have counted two dead and one reported injured.
  • Where it is: some reports place it in Shuklaganj, which is just across the Ganga near Kanpur, but the police station is Gangaghat, in Unnao district.

What is not known

No report says who was supervising, whether an engineer was on site, how long after the pour the shuttering was being removed, whether props were being taken out in a safe order, or whether the building had a permit. The house owner and contractor are not named here. We found no report of an FIR or an inquiry. Nothing in this article is a finding against any person.

Why shuttering removal is a risky stage

Concrete does not gain its full strength on the day it is cast. IS 456, the Indian code for plain and reinforced concrete, sets minimum periods before formwork and props can be struck, and says the concrete must have reached enough strength first. The periods vary with the member (a slab, a beam or a staircase), its span, the cement used and the weather. The figures quoted on construction websites differ, so ask the engineer to apply the table in the code itself.

Live or build in Unnao? Our Unnao safety guide lists the emergency numbers, the district fire stations and the main local risks, from Ganga floods to expressway crashes and factory fires.

In practice, many collapses happen when props are knocked out too early, in the wrong order, or while people stand under the slab.

What you can do

  • House owners: if you are building, appoint a qualified engineer or supervisor and ask for the shuttering to be removed only on a written go-ahead, after the engineer has checked the concrete’s age and strength.
  • Contractors: fix a safe order for removing props, keep everyone out from under the slab, and do not let a worker strike props alone. Re-prop if the engineer asks you to. Our piece on checking formwork, shores and the stop-work plan before a pour covers the stage before this one.
  • Workers: you can refuse to go under a slab or strike props if no one has said it is safe. Ask who has approved the removal and when the concrete was poured.
  • If a slab comes down: keep other people away, call 112 and 101, and do not pull at slabs or rods by hand because the rest may shift. Read how to call 112, 101 or 108 and which emergency number to call.

Other building failures we have covered include the Harsh Vihar house collapse in Delhi and the Ambala Dhulkot collapse.

  1. Workers begin removing shuttering from the basement staircase of an under-construction house on Azad Marg, Gangaghat
  2. The slab and staircase debris fall on the workers; police are informed
  3. Police, fire and SDRF teams cut iron rods and break the slab to reach the trapped men; the SDM and an additional SP supervise
  4. Both men are declared dead; one more person is treated for injuries
  5. Bodies are sent for post-mortem; police start enquiries and contact the families in Fatehpur
  6. No FIR, cause finding or compensation has been reported

Why consequences escalated

  • A basement slab and staircase collapsed during shuttering removal at an under-construction house in Gangaghat, Unnao.
  • Two men died; one more person was reported hurt in two of three accounts.
  • Rescue needed rods to be cut and the slab broken, which shows how heavy the collapse was.
  • The cause is not established, and no report says who supervised the removal or when the concrete was cast.
  • Reports differ on the dead men's roles, the time and the number injured.

Failures and risk multipliers

  • No report says whether an engineer or supervisor was on site for the shuttering removal.
  • How long after casting the shuttering was removed is not reported.
  • Whether props were being removed in a safe order, or whether anyone stood under the slab, is not known.
  • Whether the house had a building permit is not reported.
  • A contractor among the dead, if confirmed, would show the person in charge was also exposed; this is not established.

Actions that reduce risk

  1. Appoint a qualified engineer or supervisor and remove shuttering only on a written go-ahead.
  2. Apply the minimum periods in IS 456 for the member, its span, the cement and the weather.
  3. Keep everyone out from under a slab while props are struck, and remove props in an agreed order.
  4. Workers can refuse to go under a slab or strike props if no one has said it is safe.
  5. If a slab falls, keep others away, call 112 and 101, and do not pull at slabs or rods by hand.

The broader evidence

Survival sequence

  1. Never stand under a slab or staircase while props or shuttering are being removed.
  2. Ask for an engineer's go-ahead and remove props in the agreed order.
  3. If something creaks, cracks or sags, stop and move everyone out at once.
  4. If a slab falls, call 112 and 101 and keep others back.
  5. Do not pull at slabs or rods by hand; let trained rescuers cut and lift.

Limitations

  • PTI calls the dead labourers, aged 35 and 32; Amar Ujala says a contractor and a worker, aged 45 and 32. We did not print the ages.
  • The time is given as about 12.15 pm and 12.30 pm in two reports and 1.45 pm by PTI.
  • The injured number is one in two reports and none in a third.
  • The cause is not established; no engineer, permit, contractor or inquiry details have been reported, and no FIR was found by 29 October.
  • The wording on IS 456 here follows the code's general rule; third-party websites give differing day-counts, so no figures are quoted.
  • The map point is the Gangaghat area, not the exact house.
  • No Instagram, Facebook or LinkedIn video could be found and opened (no logged-in access); the three YouTube reports were matched by title, uploader, date and thumbnail, and four more are general safety learning. Names of the dead, the injured and the owner are left out on purpose. Sourcing is from three independent outlets, one of them the news agency.
