Local risks in Ahmedabad

Fires in hospitals

In August 2020, eight COVID-19 patients died when a fire broke out in the ICU of Shrey Hospital, Navrangpura, and about 40 others had to be shifted out. Hospitals are full of oxygen, wiring and patients who cannot walk, so even a small fire, like the 2025 SVP Hospital laundry fire, needs a fast and planned response.

Monsoon waterlogging and underpasses

On 22 July 2026 the city averaged 163 mm of rain, with over 315 mm at Bakrol, and 43 housing societies were waterlogged. Eight underpasses were shut, a bus got stuck at Mithakhali and the fire department carried out eight rescues.

Chemical units on the city edge

In November 2020, a blast at a chemical warehouse on Pirana-Piplaj Road killed at least 12 workers, and the fire spread to godowns next door where garments were being packed. Small units that store chemicals beside workshops and godowns can turn one fire into a disaster.

Extreme summer heat

Ahmedabad touched 44.8 C on 27 April 2026, and the IMD kept the city on orange alert for six days. AMC runs a Heat Action Plan and asks people to stay out of the sun between 12 noon and 4 pm.

Temporary structures at fairs

In December 1981, a tall Himalaya display made of timber, cloth, jute and grass at an exhibition in Asarwa burned down in under seven minutes, with 49 deaths recorded in Parliament. Crowded fairs, pandals and exhibitions with one narrow exit still carry the same risk.

Collapses at construction sites

In September 2026, part of an under-construction building collapsed at Kudasan in Gandhinagar, and 15 people were pulled out, 12 of them injured. Teams from Ahmedabad joined the rescue, and responders kept searching until the debris was cleared.
