Local risks in Kurnool

Sleeper bus fire on NH-44

At about 3 am on 24 October 2025, a private sleeper bus from Hyderabad to Bengaluru ran over a fallen motorcycle on NH-44 near Chinnatekuru, and fire spread under and through the coach. Twenty people died, the rider and 19 passengers, and survivors broke windows to get out; we cover it in a case study.

Sleeper conversions and blocked exits

Transport officials found that the bus had been converted from a seater to a sleeper without permission, its emergency doors were blocked and it carried no window-breaking hammer. After another sleeper bus fire in Andhra Pradesh in March 2026, the state set up 16 checkpoints, inspected over 1,000 buses and penalised 236 of them.

Fires in industrial estates

On the morning of 25 July 2026, a fire broke out at an incense stick factory in the Kallur Industrial Estate and spread fast because an oil mill stood on the same premises. Nobody was reported hurt and the loss was put at nearly Rs 15 lakh; the cause was still being checked.

Tungabhadra releases and floods

On 10 August 2024 a crest gate chain snapped at the Tungabhadra dam and the release rose from about 35,000 to about 1,00,000 cusecs. People in Kurnool town and in Kosigi, Mantralayam and Nandavaram mandals were asked to stay alert and keep away from the riverbed.
