Local risks in Markapuram

Sleeper bus and tipper fire near Rayavaram

Early on 26 March 2026, a sleeper bus from Jagtial in Telangana hit a gravel tipper on a downhill curve near Rayavaram, outside Markapur town, both vehicles caught fire and 14 passengers died, most of them asleep in their berths. Police arrested the owner and a driver who had no licence, and we cover the crash in a case study.

Extreme summer heat

In April 2026 Anumalapalli, near Markapur, touched 45.01 degrees Celsius, and Markapur was among the places that crossed 45 degrees that year, ahead of Rentachintala as the state’s hottest zone. On such days the advice is to stay out of the open between 11 am and 4 pm and keep drinking water.

Car fires after highway collisions

On 17 May 2022 a tyre burst and a car hit a truck near Thippayapalem in Markapuram mandal, and the car caught fire with three people trapped inside. By the time firefighters reached it the car was completely burnt, and police suspected the petrol tank was damaged and the leaking fuel caught fire.

Sleeper bus checks after two fires

After the October 2025 Kurnool fire and the March 2026 Markapuram crash, the state set up 16 special checkpoints, inspected over 1,000 buses in one drive and penalised 236 for missing permits, papers or fitness certificates. A cabinet subcommittee said sleeper services could be banned altogether if operators keep cutting corners.
