Local risks in Supaul

Kosi floods and embankment breaches

In July 2024, the Kosi barrage discharge reached 3,00,860 cusecs, 41 of its 56 gates were opened, and about 350 villages between the embankments were threatened. In late September 2024, the district magistrate said the river had reached an unprecedented 6.61 lakh cusecs, and a breach on the West Kosi embankment was repaired.

Crashes on NH-27

At about 3 am on 12 October 2026, a passenger bus from Patna to Jogbani ran into a truck parked at the side of NH-27 near Jhajha village; the bus helper died and six passengers were seriously hurt (we cover it in a case study). Reports blamed speed and a dozing driver, or an overtaking move, and no official cause is out.

Overloaded boats on the Kosi

On 4 October 2024, a boat with about 20 passengers capsized in the Kosi near Pirganj Thadi in the Kishanpur police area because it was overloaded and the current was strong. Disaster volunteers on flood duty rescued everyone.

Thatched-house fires

In February 2026, a night fire in a brick-and-thatch house in Supaul district killed a 22-year-old mother and her four-year-old daughter; a short circuit or a spark from a stove was suspected, and the thatched roof helped the fire spread fast. Thatch and cloth burn quickly, which leaves very little time to get out.

Lightning

In July 2023, lightning killed two people in Supaul, among 26 deaths across Bihar during one spell of heavy rain. Bihar also lies in a high seismic region, with most districts in zones IV and V.
