Ludhiana Fire and Emergency Safety Guide

Ludhiana is Punjab's biggest industrial city. Dyeing units, hosiery and garment factories and small workshops sit packed together in Focal Point, Sherpur, Tajpur Road and the older lanes, with the Buddha Nullah running through town and the Sutlej along its edge. This guide gives the emergency numbers and the main local hazards, with dated examples from the city. A published list of the city's fire stations could not be found, so for a fire call 101 or 112 and let the control room send the nearest tender.

Local risks in Ludhiana

Toxic gas from a sewer manhole

At about 7 am on Sunday 30 April 2023, people buying milk at a grocery shop in Giaspura began fainting. Eleven people died, among them three children aged 16, 13 and 10, and four more were treated in hospital. High hydrogen sulphide levels were found in the air, the area was sealed and cleared, and NDRF teams were called in. The cause has never been settled. A magisterial probe in July 2023 blamed no one directly and pointed to an improper sewer connection that could have let the gas flow back, and an expert panel report in October 2023 said the exact cause was very difficult to establish.

Factory collapse during repair work

On the evening of Saturday 8 March 2025, a multi-storey textile factory in Phase 8 of Focal Point came down while repair work was going on, with a pillar reported to have given way. One worker died that evening, a second body was pulled out the next day, and one more worker was still trapped under the debris at the last report. Two NDRF teams, the police and the fire brigade worked through the night with manual tools, and a magisterial inquiry and an FIR followed.

Textile and dyeing unit fires

In late June 2026, fire reached the upper floors of Shreyans Fabrics, a multi-storey textile unit in Kailash Nagar, Sherpur. Crews arrived at about 12.10 am and had to use ladders because the main entrance was blocked. The fire engulfed the whole unit within an hour, 175 fire tenders were used over 18 hours, and the workers inside got out safely. A short circuit was suspected and the cause was not established. In November 2025, a fire in a dyeing unit in Focal Point, Phase 8 took over two hours to bring under control with six tenders. Stored garments on the first floor fed it, and no one was hurt.

Buddha Nullah waterlogging and Sutlej bundhs

On 1 September 2025, after more than seven hours of rain, 2 to 3 feet of water stood in Basti Jodhewal, Tajpur Road, Samrala Chowk and Janakpuri. With the sewage treatment plants overflowing, the Deputy Commissioner ordered all dyeing units and printing clusters shut with immediate effect. On 6 September, a breach in the Dhussi bundh on the Sutlej near Sahnewal was held back with a temporary ring bundh, which more than 1,500 people, including Army and NDRF personnel, worked to raise. Sasrali Colony was among the places facing a serious threat.

Road crashes on highways and village roads

In 2023, Ludhiana recorded 402 road deaths in 504 reported crashes, the third highest among Indian cities after Agra and Asansol. Nearby roads are no safer. On the afternoon of Sunday 18 October 2026, a speeding car ran into a group of rural job-scheme workers resting at the roadside on the Lehragaga-Jakhal road near Alisher village in Sangrur district. Eight people died and about 12 were injured, as we cover in a case study.
