Local risks in Panaji

Electric scooter and battery fires

At about 11 pm on 12 October 2026, a fire broke out at an Ola electric scooter service centre at Sankhali, Sanquelim, and Bicholim fire crews took about one and a half hours to bring it under control. The count of damaged scooters differed between reports and the cause was not established, as we cover in a case study.

Nightclub and tourist-venue fires

On 6 December 2025, a fire at a nightclub in Arpora, near Panaji, killed 25 people. The state fire director later said the club had no valid fire NOC on the department's records.

Old buildings and crowded hotels

The Goa fire service warns that older buildings with outdated wiring, and hotels at tourist spots without enough fire safety, are the main structure-fire risks. Electrical faults, cooking fires and stored chemicals are the usual starting points.

Monsoon and coastal flooding

Panaji is named among the Goa towns open to coastal flooding from storm surges and high tides. In heavy June to September rain, blocked drains can back water into streets and homes, and the Mandovi can overflow.

Cyclones

Goa is more exposed than inland India to cyclones, with storm surges, heavy rain and strong winds on the coast. When a warning is issued, bring boats ashore and tie down loose roofs and hoardings.
