Local risks in Bokaro Steel City

Steel plant gas exposure

On 11 October 2026, two workers died after gas exposure at the ESL Steel plant at Siyaljori in Chandankiyari block, in the Bokaro district. The state chief inspector of factories said carbon monoxide appeared to be the cause but that the post-mortem and the inquiry were awaited, the district ordered a probe with a 72-hour report deadline, and the company said it would run its own inquiry; we cover it in a case study.

Pipeline fire at the Bokaro Steel Plant

On 6 April 2024, leftover residue in a shut mixed-gas pipeline caught fire during repair work at the Bokaro Steel Plant, and 23 people, some of them contract workers, were kept under observation at the general hospital after breathing smoke. There were no deaths, a gas analyser found no leakage, and the company said workers are briefed on safety rules.

Market and shop fires

On 6 September 2026 at about 6:30 am, a fire destroyed eight shops in the Sector 6 market; three fire tenders brought it under control in an hour and nobody was hurt. Officials suspected a short circuit, said some shops had tampered with their electricity connections, and noted the shops stood on encroached land.

Damodar floods below Tenughat dam

Tenughat dam on the Damodar, built in 1974, has no flood storage and is run by the Jharkhand government. On 4 August 2024, West Bengal blamed a sudden large release from it for flooding downstream, and the Damodar Valley Corporation said the discharge would fall as the rain eased.
