Jammu Fire and Emergency Safety Guide

Jammu is the winter capital of the Union Territory, built along the Tawi, with old crowded markets near the railway station and industrial areas to the south. Fires in tightly packed shops, tanker yards and factories, and floods from the Tawi, are the hazards this guide covers with dated examples. It puts the emergency numbers, four fire station lines and the main local risks on one page.

Take these numbers with you

Print the Jammu emergency card for the fridge or the front door, and cut out the wallet cards. It holds 112, 101, the ambulance and police numbers. This guide has no local numbers yet, so there are blank lines to write your local fire station, police station and nearest hospital, and your family contacts.

Local risks in Jammu

Packed shop clusters near the railway station

Around 10.30 pm on 25 October 2026, a fire in Shiv Market opposite Jammu railway station gutted around 40 shops and burned for nearly five hours, with reports of the shop count ranging from 12 to 40. No one was hurt, a short circuit was suspected but not confirmed, and the narrow approach slowed the fire crews. We cover it in a case study.

Oil tankers and jhuggies at Transport Nagar

On Wednesday 1 April 2026, a fire that began in one oil tanker near the RTO office at Transport Nagar spread to four or five others, and two tankers were completely gutted. Nobody was hurt and the crews needed about an hour to bring it under control, but the area is crowded with tankers and jhuggies and was described as highly vulnerable.

Factory fires in the Bari Brahmana belt

On 30 December 2024, a fire damaged the stock, plant, machinery and building of a snack manufacturing unit at Kartholi in Bari Brahmana, and work at the unit stopped. No casualty was reported. Industrial units in the belt carry large stocks of packing material and oil, so a small fire spreads fast.

Tawi and nallah floods in the monsoon

On 26 and 27 August 2025, Jammu got about 380 mm of rain in 24 hours, the most in a day since 1910 at the city observatory. Rivers and streams ran at or near the danger mark, low-lying parts of the city were under water, over 10,000 people were moved to safety across the Union Territory, and dozens of trains were cancelled. Reports differ on the total toll, and the worst landslide was on the Vaishno Devi route, outside the city.

Heat waves and crowded events

The district administration has published a heat wave action plan for 2025-26, an advisory on high heat index, a flash flood advisory and an advisory for managing crowds at festivals, pilgrimages and rallies prone to stampede. These sit next to the fire and flood risks, because Jammu sees heavy footfall around its temples and railway station.
