Local risks in Giridih

LPG cylinder fires and blasts

On the evening of 18 October 2026, a 5 kg LPG cylinder caught fire and burst in a house in Mangaso village, Dhanwar block, killing a 26-year-old woman and her young niece; police said she tried to throw the burning cylinder out and it hit a wall and burst, and no cause has been given for the fire (we cover it in a case study). In March 2021, four members of one family died in a blast at Tisri that police said appeared to be a cylinder blast, though the cause was not confirmed.

Collapses in closed and illegal coal mines

In May 2017, five people died when a closed mine caved in at Kabribad while about 300 people were digging coal there illegally, police said. The same report said more than 500 people in Jharkhand had died digging coal from closed mines.

Wild elephants entering villages

On 28 July 2023, a lone tusker separated from its herd walked into Dhargulli panchayat in Bagodar, broke into an anganwadi centre and damaged a temple and a few houses before villagers chased it off with firecrackers. Nobody was hurt that day, but chasing an elephant at close range is dangerous.

Lightning

In July 2020, two people in Giridih district, a 12-year-old boy and a 35-year-old farmer, were killed by lightning during the day, among five lightning deaths reported across Jharkhand that day. Open fields and lone trees are where people are caught.
