Local risks in Morbi

Bridge and river-front crowds

On 30 October 2022, the Julto Pul suspension footbridge collapsed over the Machchhu, four days after reopening, and 135 people died. The inquiry found corroded cable wires and an untested repair, so a ticket or an open gate is no proof that a crowded bridge is safe.

Ceramic and paper units

The district disaster plan counts around 542 major accident hazard units in and around Morbi, among its ceramic, sanitaryware and paper units. On 19 June 2026, a fire at a Morbi paper mill needed multiple fire tenders, with no casualties reported.

Gas pipelines and chemicals

The Morbi-Mundra gas pipeline runs at high pressure, and the district plan warns of fires from leaks and breaks, including in floods and earthquakes. Gujarat Gas serves 887 industrial and 175 commercial connections in the district.

Machchhu floods and water-edge deaths

The district plan lists villages near Morbi, among them Lilapar, Makansar and Juna Sadulka, at risk when the Machchhu-2 dam releases water. On 24 September 2026, four men entered the river at Juna Sadulka for idol immersion; two were rescued and two died.

Earthquake zone IV

The plan puts Morbi in seismic Zone IV and says old buildings in old Morbi may be affected. In the earthquake of 26 January 2001, 421 people died in Morbi district.
