Local risks in Rishikesh

Gorge crash on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway

Early on 15 October 2026, a car with five relatives went off the highway near Pali village, about 4 km from Devprayag, and fell some 150 metres into a gorge. Two people died and three were hurt, rescuers carried the bodies across the river on a raft, and no cause has been published. We cover it in a case study.

Monsoon landslide at Lakshman Jhula

On 14 August 2023, heavy rain brought a landslide down on a resort at Lakshman Jhula, and four bodies, including a couple and their son, were recovered from the debris. Uttarakhand's rain-related toll had reached 10 by 16 August.

Ganga floods at the ghats

A flood washed away the old rope bridge at Lakshman Jhula in 1924, and in the 2013 floods the Ganga carried away a Shiva statue near Parmarth Niketan. The ghats and riverside lanes are the first places to go under when the river rises.

Washouts and landslides on the pilgrim highways

In the same August 2023 rain, a stretch of the Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway was washed away near Pipalkoti Bharenpani, and the Pauri-Kotdwar-Dugadda highway was blocked by landslide debris at Amsaur. Pilgrims and drivers can be stuck for hours with no phone signal.
