Local risks in Dehradun

Hill-road crash on the Chakrata-Tyuni road

On the afternoon of 2 October 2026, a car with three people went off the Chakrata-Tyuni road near Chillad and fell into a gorge. Police and the State Disaster Response Force climbed down to bring them out; one man died, two were injured and taken by 108 ambulance to the Tyuni health centre. Police were still looking into the cause. We cover it in a case study.

Gorge crash on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway

Early on 15 October 2026, a car with five relatives went off the highway near Pali village, about 4 km from Devprayag, and fell some 150 metres into a gorge. Two people died and three were hurt, and rescuers carried the bodies across the river on a raft; no cause has been published. We cover it in a case study.

Heavy monsoon rain, waterlogging and landslides

On 14 August 2023, heavy rain brought a landslide down on a resort at Lakshman Jhula, near Rishikesh, and four bodies were recovered; by 16 August, rain had killed 10 people in Uttarakhand. A news photo from that week shows commuters wading through a waterlogged road in Dehradun, and the valley's low-lying and poorly drained areas can flood in a heavy monsoon spell.

Flash flooding at Sahastradhara

On 16 September 2025, heavy rain triggered a flood at Sahastradhara, on the edge of Dehradun. Streams that run dry for months can fill within minutes, so keep away from stream beds and bridges during heavy rain.
