Local risks in Asansol

Sponge iron and steel plants

On the night of 17 October 2026, a chimney under construction collapsed at the Shyam SEL sponge iron plant in the Ikra industrial area, Jamuria. Five workers were pulled out of the rubble, four were declared dead and the fifth was admitted to a private hospital in Durgapur; police are looking at the construction and safety arrangements and no cause has been announced. We cover it in a case study.

Molten metal at Burnpur

At about 4 am on 6 May 2017, molten iron fell on contract workers in the steel melting shop of SAIL's IISCO plant at Burnpur, and two of them, aged 25 and 23, died on the spot. SAIL's first view was that steel spilled from a ladle being placed on the caster turret, and it set up an enquiry committee.

Coal mines and underground workings

On 14 May 2026, an air blast in Section 27 of the Parashia colliery at Jamuria brought down part of an underground wall around 10.30 am. One worker died and at least 15 were injured, several of them contract labourers, and unions alleged safety lapses while a detailed inquiry began.

House fires at night

At about 2 am on 29 June 2025, a fire that began on the ground floor of a house in Asansol killed three members of a family, and a fourth person was taken to hospital in a critical condition. Police believed a short circuit caused it, and neighbours and guards from a nearby complex tried to put it out until a fire tender arrived.

Damodar floods and DVC releases

On 18 August 2026, All India Radio reported an alert for the lower Damodar basin in Paschim Bardhaman after the DVC released excess water from the Maithon and Panchet reservoirs. Flood-like situations were reported in Asansol and Burnpur, but the report gave no figures.
