Local risks in Adilabad

Fire in the newborn care unit at RIMS

Late on 21 September 2026, fire and thick smoke hit the Special Newborn Care Unit at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Adilabad, and five infants died. A six-member committee looked into it and the first accounts pointed to an air conditioner and faulty wiring, but the final cause had not been officially published when we last checked; we cover it in a case study.

Extreme summer heat

On 26 April 2026 Adilabad recorded 45.3 degrees Celsius, about 3.5 degrees above normal, and every district of Telangana stayed above 41 degrees that day. Three suspected heatstroke deaths were reported from other Telangana districts the same day, two of them farm workers.

Penganga floods and cut-off roads

On 31 July 2026 the Penganga flooded the Anandpur bridge in Jainad mandal and cut the road link to Maharashtra, and schools across Adilabad district were closed for the day. Vehicles were found stranded on NH-353B near Tarnam village, and panchayat staff were posted at overflowing bridges and culverts.

Cotton yards and godowns

Adilabad is a major cotton trading town, so stacks of dry cotton sit in yards and godowns every season. We found no reported cotton fire in Adilabad itself, but in November 2024 about 10,000 bales burned at a private godown near Hyderabad and the walls fell because of the heat.
