Local risks in Indore

Residential building fires and sealed buildings

On 7 May 2022 a fire in a residential building in Swarna Bagh Colony killed seven people, most of them from smoke; flames and black smoke blocked the main door and the terrace door turned too hot to use, and the building had no fire safety arrangements. After a fire in Lucknow, the corporation and the district administration sealed 18 more buildings on 24 June 2026, taking the number sealed for fire safety failures in Indore to 151.

Narrow market lanes and shops beside hospitals

Chhappan Dukan, Sarafa Bazaar and other crowded market pockets have narrow lanes where fire engines struggle, which is why four compact fire bikes were added in August 2026. On 23 March 2026 a fire in a garage and three shops next to Choithram Hospital burned for over two hours, and firefighters pulled out gas cylinders before they could catch fire.

Chemical and factory fires on the industrial belt

At about 2.15 am on 14 October 2025 a fire destroyed a four-storey chemical factory of about 20,000 sq ft on Sanwer Road, with no casualties and the cause not known. More than 100 water tankers were used, and crews came from Depalpur, Betma, Mhow, Pithampur and Sanwer to join Indore's own.

Record rain of September 2023

Indore recorded 144.7 mm of rain in 24 hours between 15 and 17 September 2023, a record for the city, and several roads and residential colonies went under water. More than 200 people, including an eight-day-old baby, were rescued by residents, police and the SDRF.

Old temple structures and festival crowds

On Ram Navami, 30 March 2023, the cover of an old stepwell at the Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal temple in Patel Nagar gave way under the weight of devotees during a hawan, and 30 to 35 people fell in. At least 13 died that day and the toll later rose to 36.

Contaminated tap water in Bhagirathpura

From late December 2025 residents of Bhagirathpura fell ill and died in numbers, an outbreak blamed on contaminated tap water, and by 2 January 2026 over 200 people were in hospital. By late January the official death toll was 16 while locals counted 30, and the High Court ordered an inquiry commission headed by a retired judge.
