Local risks in Sundargarh

Coal-corridor trailers and night collisions

In the early hours of 25 October 2026, two trailers collided head-on near Aunlabahal Chhak on the coal corridor road in the Lefripada police station area, roughly 23 km west of the town. Both caught fire and both drivers were burnt to death in their cabs; the cause is not established, and we cover it in a case study.

Accident-prone road stretches

The district plan marks 10 accident-prone areas on the 30 km road from Sundargarh to Jharsuguda, 20 on the 120 km road towards Rourkela and 6 inside the town limits near Hospital Chowk. It also lists district roads with heavy traffic beside open-cast coal mines.

Lightning

The district plan calls Sundargarh highly prone to lightning, heat wave, drowning and snakebite, and enters 205 lightning cases for 2006 to 2023. When thunder starts, go into a building or a vehicle, and keep away from trees and open fields.

Flood from the Ib river

The 330-bed district hospital at Sundargarh is listed among the health centres exposed to flood from the Ib and Brahmani rivers, and the plan notes floods in 1971, 1994, 1997, 2001 and 2011. Drinking-water points in Sundargarh Sadar are also marked as flood-exposed.

Forest fire and mine-industry fire hazard

The plan estimates that 90 per cent of forest-floor fires in the district are man-made, with dry leaf fall from February to June making the south-west and north of the district most vulnerable. It also says that fast growth of mines and industry brings industrial and fire hazards that need preparedness.
