Local risks in Solan

Fire in an old wooden market building at Arki

At about 2 am on 12 January 2026, fire broke out in an old four-storey wooden building in Arki's main market, with shops below and migrant workers' families sleeping above. Ten people died, at least six LPG cylinders burst, and water had to be brought by tenders from Solan and Nalagarh. We cover it in a case study.

Cloudburst and flash floods, August 2023

A cloudburst in Solan district on the night of Sunday 13 August 2023 washed homes away and flooded roads, and early reports gave a toll of seven or nine. The totals differed between reports, so treat any single figure with care.

Steep slopes and monsoon rain

The district is mostly mountainous, from 300 to 3,000 metres above sea level, and sits in the catchment of four rivers. In the same August 2023 spell, Himachal counted 71 deaths in three days and 214 rain deaths since the monsoon began on 24 June.
