Local risks in Mandi Dabwali

Wedding halls, pandals and school functions

On 23 December 1995, a fire swept through the cloth pandal at Rajiv Marriage Palace during the DAV school's annual function, and the Supreme Court has recorded 446 deaths. The pandal had loose wiring, flammable cloth and one main gate, so check the exits before you sit down at any hall or tent.

Village and farm fires

The Sirsa district disaster plan says fires are far more common in rural areas than in towns. Most start from electrical short circuits and spread through dried leaves and hay, which also puts tethered cattle at risk.

Ghaggar floods

The district plan calls the Ghaggar a repeated flash-flood hazard. In July 1993, the river touched 43,000 cusecs, 80 villages went under water, about 15,000 people were evacuated and there was nearly 4 feet of floodwater on the highway towards Dabwali.

Road crashes

The district plan records 284 road accident cases in Sirsa district in 2011, with 149 killed, and 252 cases in 2012, with 142 killed. These are district figures from more than ten years ago, but the plan calls crashes frequent, especially on the Sirsa-Fatehabad road.
