Local risks in Pune

High-rise societies

In September 2025, a 15-year-old boy died of smoke in a 12th-floor flat fire at an Undri society, and fire teams found the building's own firefighting system was not working. PMC then gave every housing society seven days to get its fire systems running; we have covered this fire in our Undri case study.

Crowded markets

Narrow lanes packed with stalls and stock let a fire jump from shop to shop before tenders can get close. In March 2021, a night fire gutted more than 500 shops at Fashion Street in the Camp area, and about 16 fire tenders were needed.

Flash floods along nullahs

Streams like Ambil Odha and Bhairoba Nullah can rise within hours when heavy rain falls on the hills around the city. On 25 September 2019, at least 17 people died in Pune, with most of the damage on the banks of Ambil Odha.

Khadakwasla dam releases

When the dam's catchment gets heavy rain, water is let into the Mutha and low-lying areas along the river go under. On 25 July 2024, releases crossed 35,000 cusec, and three men were electrocuted in the Deccan area while moving their submerged handcart.

Factory and building site fires

Fires in industrial buildings and sites still under construction can trap workers on upper floors. In January 2021, a fire in an under-construction building at the Serum Institute plant in Manjari killed five people.

Speeding at night

Empty roads late at night tempt drivers to speed, and drunk driving turns that into tragedy. In May 2024, a Porsche allegedly driven by a drunk 17-year-old hit a motorbike at Kalyani Nagar and killed two young IT professionals; our case study follows where the case stands.
