Local risks in Sonipat

Foam, mattress and plastics unit fires

Just before 4 am on 15 October 2026, a fire swept through a foam and mattress-making unit on Safiabad Road near Barota village. An uncle and his nephew, both migrant workers, died and four workers were hurt; a tin shed came down, and crews needed about six hours and more than 10 fire tenders from several stations to bring it under control. Police were still looking into the cause and a short circuit was suspected. We cover it in a case study.

Fires across the Delhi border

Sonipat touches Delhi, and the same crowded factory and office buildings are a short drive away. At Mundka, about 35 km off, 27 people died on 13 May 2022 when smoke filled the only way down from a four-storey commercial building. On 13 September 2026, six people were hurt jumping from a building beside a burning warehouse and factory in Swaroop Nagar.

Yamuna floodplain and heavy monsoon rain

The Khadar strip along the Yamuna lies 20 to 30 feet below the upland plain and is the first land to go under when the river rises. In July 2023, about 1,354 places in 12 Haryana districts, Sonipat among them, were reported flooded, and the state issued a flood alert for the first time.

Crashes on the KMP Expressway

The 135 km Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway starts at Kundli in Sonipat district. On 8 September 2026, a pickup carrying pilgrims and a truck collided on it near Mandothi village in Jhajjar district, and reports gave two or three deaths and 15 to more than 24 injured. We cover it in a case study and keep both sets of numbers.
