Local risks in Gopalganj

Cooking-gas leak fires

On the evening of 13 October 2026, gas rushed out as a fresh cylinder was being fitted in a house in Safiyabad village while a puja diya burned in the room. Two children were reported dead, later reports said three, and well over a dozen people were burnt, many sent on to Gorakhpur. We cover it in a case study.

Gandak floods and embankment breaches

On 30 September 2026 about 6 m of an embankment gave way near Sheetalpur in Baikunthpur block, and villages including Parsauni and Pakhan were threatened. The Gandak at Dumariaghat was above its highest flood level that night, after a flow of about 5.4 lakh cusecs at the Valmikinagar barrage.

Spurious liquor

In August 2016, deaths from illicit liquor in Khajurbani, Gopalganj, were reported with a toll that rose from 13 to 16 in some counts, and 25 policemen were suspended. In October 2024, two of the 43 spurious-liquor deaths reported across Saran, Siwan and Gopalganj were in Gopalganj.

Thatched houses and village fires

Most kutcha houses in the district have thatch roofs and wooden frames, and in summer winds a spark from a traditional stove can spread through a whole village. The Safiyabad house in our case study was a thatched, hut-like house.
