Local risks in Lucknow

Coaching centres and commercial buildings

At about 3 pm on 22 June 2026 a fire started in a three-storey building on Usha Mehta Marg, Aliganj, that housed a coaching centre, an animation studio and a pet shop. Smoke blocked the way out, some people jumped, and firefighters had to break a wall from the next building to reach those inside; 15 people died, most of them young students. A special investigation team is still looking into the cause, and early reports about a single staircase and residential approval are not official findings yet.

Hotel fires

At about 7 am on 5 September 2022 a fire in Levana Suites, a hotel in Hazratganj, killed four people, and firefighters wore oxygen masks to bring out 24 guests and staff. The District Magistrate suspected a short circuit; the hotel had never submitted its building map to the development authority, and it was ordered sealed and demolished.

Hospital fires

A fire broke out on the second floor of Lok Bandhu Hospital at about 10 pm on 14 April 2025, and more than 200 patients were shifted to KGMU, Balrampur and Civil Hospital. A short circuit was the first suspicion, and reports differed on whether any patient had died.

Crowded markets and EV showrooms

On the evening of 21 October 2026 a fire at an electric two-wheeler showroom in Gola Bazaar, Sadar Bazaar, gutted about 17 vehicles and damaged a utensil shop next door. Nobody was hurt, but the market was full and shopkeepers panicked; police cleared the neighbouring shops, and we cover it in a case study.

Gomti floods and river drowning

In early October 2026 the Gomti stayed in spate for days, the riverfront was closed, and more than 200 houses were reported under water around Faizullaganj and Bakshi Ka Talab, with residents moving by boat. On 22 September 2026 three men drowned in the Sai river near Jabraila Bridge during a Ganesh idol immersion, as we cover in a case study.

Building collapse

At about 5 pm on 7 September 2024 a three-storey godown building in Transport Nagar, used for a motor workshop and warehouses, collapsed. Eight people died and 28 were injured, and NDRF and SDRF teams worked through the night; some construction work was under way inside.
