Local risks in Surat

Textile markets on Ring Road

One person died of smoke in the February 2025 Shivshakti Textile Market fire. Since 9 September 2026 the Shyam Sangini, Salasar and Regent markets have burned too, and on 19 October a third-floor shop at Adinath, Salabatpura, was controlled in about two to three hours, depending on the report, with no injuries reported and a short circuit only suspected. Keep two ways out, keep stock off the stairs, and check your wiring and fire NOC.

Coaching classes in commercial complexes

In the 2019 Takshashila Arcade fire at Sarthana, 22 people, most of them students, died (some reports say 23). The class was on an upper floor with a single way in and out and no working fire safety equipment, and some students jumped to escape the smoke.

Tapi floods and Ukai dam releases

The Tapi runs through the heart of the city, and SMC lists river and creek (khadi) floods among Surat's main hazards. In August 2006, heavy releases from Ukai dam flooded about 128 sq km of what was then a 326 sq km city. On 24 or 25 September 2026, three men from Kholvad died when a small boat capsized in the Tapi near Dhoran Pardi during an idol-immersion trip, although an artificial pond had been provided near their homes.

Monsoon waterlogging

A single day of very heavy rain can flood roads, underpasses and low-lying societies. On 23 June 2025, Surat got more than 8 inches of rain in a day; the fire department moved over 100 people to safety and the Tapi causeway was closed.

Toxic gas in GIDC areas

Illegal dumping of chemicals into drains can release deadly gas. In January 2022, a tanker emptying chemicals into a drain at Sachin GIDC released gas that killed six people and sent about 20 to hospital.

Heavy industry at Hazira and boilers in Udhna

Hazira's steel and energy plants handle hot coal, molten metal and fuel every day. On 31 December 2024, a fire at the AM/NS India steel plant killed four contract workers. On 13 October 2026, a boiler-area fire at Krishan Silk Mill on Udhna Road No. 2 needed about 15 vehicles and around 80 personnel; reports differ on whether six workers were hospitalised or four were seriously burnt, and the cause is not established.

Dumpers and heavy vehicles on city roads

On 16 or 17 October 2026, a dumper hit a moped from behind on the Vesu VIP road and one of the two sisters on it died; the driver left the dumper and fled, and no arrest has been reported. A few days later, another dumper reportedly hit a couple on a motorcycle on the Hazira road and the woman died. Never ride alongside, just ahead of or close behind a dumper, as our Vesu case study and heavy-vehicle blog explain.

Hotfix plastic waste fires

Heaps of hotfix plastic waste, the film left over from heat-transfer work on cloth, keep catching fire. The largest burned at the municipal waste plant near Mithikhadi, Limbayat, on 27 September 2026, and smaller heap fires followed at Punagam and Puna, with no casualties reported. Residents near the heaps report smoke and breathing trouble.
