Local risks in Solapur

Solvent and chemical fires in MIDC estates

On the afternoon of 3 October 2025, welding sparks reportedly fell on a solvent container at a chemical unit in Chincholi MIDC, and hundreds of filled cans kept the fire going for more than four hours. All 15 workers got out, but they had fought the fire alone for about half an hour before the fire station was alerted, as we cover in a case study.

Textile units and factory fires

About three in four of the 657 units at MIDC Akkalkot Road make chaddars, terry towels and napkins, and cotton, yarn and packing burn fast once a fire starts. In May 2025, eight people died in a fire at a textile unit in this area.

Bhima and Sina floods

A major flood hit the Bhima in 1996, and water let out from upstream dams still brings a flood at least once in two or three years, with about 215 villages on the Bhima and Sina banks often affected. When the dams release surplus water, settlements downstream can go under.

Earthquake risk

The Killari earthquake of 30 September 1993 was felt across Solapur district, where 11 people died, 226 were injured and 14,183 houses in 524 villages were badly damaged. Older houses with weak walls are the main worry.

The corporation runs five fire stations with nine vehicles; the MIDC station at Chincholi is added because of the October 2025 solvent fire. Lines were checked on 26 October 2026 and not test-called. In an emergency, call 112 or 101 first; station lines are office numbers.
