Local risks in Panipat

Night fires in thread and yarn units

At about 3.30 am on 27 October 2026, fire broke out in a thread-making unit in the Shivnagar industrial area near Kishanpura, which makes yarn from cotton and synthetic fibre and had workers inside. One worker died at the spot and another was critically burnt, and the cause is not known; we cover it in a case study.

Textile mill and warehouse fires

The district disaster plan records a textile mill fire in Panipat on 7 October 2007 in which 10 people died, with a short circuit as the cause. On 9 November 2025, fires at a factory on Jatal Road and a cloth warehouse on Barsat Road needed help from Sonipat, Karnal and the refinery, fertiliser and thermal plants, and no casualties were mentioned.

Water for the fire tenders

A report of 21 April 2026 says only four hydrants fill the tenders, at Hali Park, Sector 25, the Sector 18 toll plaza and Samalkha, and a refill takes 15 to 20 minutes. Most factories have no tank or tube well of their own, and the industrial area has more than 20,000 factories.

Refinery, fertiliser and chemical units

The district plan counts nine major accident hazard units, among them the oil refinery, the fertiliser plant and the thermal power station, and recalls an ammonia leak at the fertiliser plant in 1992. On 12 June 2010, a fire in chemical vessels holding 5 tonnes of triethylaluminium at the naphtha cracker plant injured two people.

Yamuna floods

On 18 August 2025 the Yamuna reached the danger mark of 231.85 m at Panipat after more than 1.78 lakh cusecs were released upstream, and crops on about 14,000 acres were reported waterlogged, with no major damage in the city. In the 2010 flood, the embankment breached by 80 feet at Pathergarh and about 2,500 acres went under water.

Crashes on NH-44 (GT Road)

In 2024 the district recorded 570 road accidents and 308 deaths, and police named NH-44 black spots at Nangal Kheri, Dahar Chowk and near the Nexa showroom, among others. On a Friday night in October 2024, a truck hit a car from behind on the NH-44 flyover near Sanjay Chowk; the car caught fire and four of the five men died.
