Local risks in Kannur

High-rise flat fires and narrow roads

On 26 October 2026 a fire gutted a flat on the 9th floor of the 13-storey Rainbow Apartments at Payyambalam, as we cover in a case study. The tenants were out and nobody was hurt, but the narrow road and the little open space around the tower made it hard for the fire vehicles to get in.

Drowning at Payyambalam beach

In early November 2025 three medical students from Karnataka drowned at Payyambalam beach. One was swept away while bathing and the two who tried to save him were also caught, at a spot where authorities had warned of strong waves and whirlpools.

Earth cave-ins at highway worksites in heavy rain

On the Taliparamba to Muzhappilangad stretch of NH 66, a 34-year-old migrant worker died at Chalakkunnu in May 2025 when the earth gave way at a retaining wall site. Heavy rain had set in and a red alert was out for Kannur.

Monsoon landslips and flash floods in the hills

On 1 August 2022 a landslip at Nedumpuram, near Peravoor, swept a mother and her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter into floodwater, and the child died. Landslides were reported at several places in the hill panchayats that week and others went missing.
