On the night of 23 to 24 October 2026, a slide on the Coonoor ghat road near Burliar buried a state transport bus, killing the driver and badly hurting the conductor. Burliar had 25 cm of rain in 24 hours, about 30 spots on the ghat roads were blocked over two days, and we cover it in a case study.
In the same rain, a hotel retaining wall collapsed at Theetukkal in Ooty and damaged two cars and six two-wheelers. A night watchman trapped in the mud was pulled out by fire and rescue staff.
More than 200 vehicles were stranded that night, and one Kerala school group of 78 students and 8 teachers was helped across the blocked road with ropes. Tourist spots were shut, vehicles were barred from 6 pm to 7 am for three days and the mountain train was cancelled.
The Coonoor ghat has 14 hairpin bends and was shut by landslides after heavy rain in 2010. The Nilgiris ghat roads can stay closed for days or weeks after slips, and the district has been fully cut off on rare occasions.
