Local risks in Kalpetta

Night crashes on tourist and ghat routes

Around 1.45 am on 12 October 2026, a tempo traveller carrying a student group home from Munnar reportedly hit a truck at Beenachi near Sulthan Bathery and overturned. Two people died and 13 were injured, and driver fatigue was mentioned early but not confirmed, as we cover in a case study.

Landslides in the taluk of Kalpetta

In the early hours of 30 July 2024, landslides hit Mundakkai and Chooralmala villages in Meppadi, in the same taluk as Kalpetta. By the end of the first week 231 bodies had been recovered and 118 people were missing.

Relief camps and closed areas after a disaster

By 3 August 2024, more than 10,000 people were living in 93 relief camps across Wayanad. Entry to the worst-hit villages was still banned on 19 August, so a disaster here disrupts life for weeks.

Very heavy monsoon rain on steep slopes

Mundakkai received 572 mm of rain in the 48 hours before the 2024 slides, and the local disaster plan of 2020 had already marked it as landslide-prone. Kalpetta averages about 3,500 mm of rain a year, and July is the wettest month.
