Local risks in Thane

Highway crashes on the Mumbai-Nashik road

Around 1.15 pm on 16 September 2026, a family MPV with 11 people struck a stationary truck on the Mumbai-bound side of the Mumbai-Nashik highway near Atgaon, Shahapur taluka. Later counts were 5 dead and 6 injured, as we cover in a case study, and the cause was still under inquiry.

Monsoon waterlogging

On 4 July 2026, heavy rain since the early hours and a red alert from the weather office kept the corporation's control room busy, with pumps watched at usual trouble spots such as the Vitawa subway. Residents were asked to call the control room on 022-25371010 or the toll-free line 1800-222-108.

Old and illegal buildings

On 4 April 2013 a building at Mumbra collapsed and 74 people died, including 18 children, which remains the worst collapse the area has seen. Any older or unauthorised building deserves a structural check before the next monsoon.

Chemical blasts in MIDC Dombivli

On 23 May 2024, a blast and fire at a chemical unit in MIDC Dombivli killed 11 people by one count and 13 by a later count, and injured at least 64. Ash and a chemical smell spread over about 4 km, so families near the estate were affected too.

Factory and godown fires in Bhiwandi

Late on 1 October 2025, a large fire broke out at a paper factory in Bhiwandi and firefighters were still working the next morning. Nobody was reported hurt, but paper stacks burn deep inside and the narrow lanes make it hard for fire tenders to get close.

Hospital fires

On 28 April 2021, four patients died in a hospital fire at Mumbra. Families should know the exits and where the oxygen and fire equipment sit before a patient is admitted.
