Local risks in Mysuru

Old markets and heritage buildings

In August 2012, part of the 120-year-old Lansdowne Building near KR Circle caved in after two days of rain and killed four people in a shop below. The building is still barricaded, and in 2025 there was open worry about the 700 shops in the weak Devaraja Market building every monsoon.

Dasara and palace crowds

The district disaster plan lists stampede, old building collapse and falls from trees along the Dasara procession route as real risks. On Christmas night 2025, a balloon seller's helium cylinder burst at the Jayamarthanda Gate of the palace in a big festival crowd, killing him and a woman from Nanjangud and injuring others.

Kabini and Kapila floods

The district plan warns that releases of more than 60,000 cusecs from Kabini dam flood villages and roads in H.D. Kote, Nanjangud and Periyapatna taluks. In August 2020, nearly 80,000 cusecs from Kabini, Nugu and Taraka dams pushed the Kapila over its banks and blocked the Mysuru-Ooty road at Nanjangud.

Night crashes on the highways

Around 3.30 am on 16 October 2026, a sleeper bus bound for Kerala and a lorry collided head-on near Periyapatna, killing four and injuring more than 20, according to news reports. In January 2024, a KSRTC bus and a jeep full of farm labourers collided head-on in Hunsur, and four died on the spot.

Godown fires in Hebbal industrial area

In April 2023, a firecracker godown beside Bommanahalli lake in the Hebbal industrial area caught fire and crackers worth over Rs 5 crore burnt. It took 84 firefighters and 14 fire vehicles from the city and nearby taluks more than three hours to put out.

Hazardous factories and LPG plants

The district plan counts 77 hazardous industries, including 10 major accident hazard units in Mysuru and Nanjangud taluks that store LPG, petrol, naphtha and other chemicals. Fire, explosion and toxic gas release are the main dangers named, so people living near these units should know their way out.
