Local risks in Jaipur

Walled city market fires

Old katlas and bazaars pack shops, cartons and narrow stairs into one building, and fire tenders struggle in the lanes. In September 2026 a fire at Purohit Ji Ka Katla in Tripolia Bazaar hit more than 20 shops, and the nearest hydrant was found to be about 1.5 to 2 km away at Ghat Gate.

Hospital ICU fires

An ICU is full of oxygen, wiring and patients who cannot walk out on their own. In October 2025 a fire in the neuro ICU storeroom of the SMS Hospital trauma centre killed six patients, as per officials (early reports said eight); we have covered it in our case study.

LPG tankers on highways

Gas tankers use the Jaipur-Ajmer highway every day, and a leak can turn into a fireball within minutes. In December 2024 a tanker was hit near Bhankrota, the gas cloud caught fire and the toll reached 17, with around 40 vehicles burnt; our case study has the full story.

Fuel depots and industrial areas

Sitapura and the other industrial belts store large amounts of fuel and chemicals close to homes and hotels. In October 2009 a petrol leak at the Indian Oil depot in Sitapura caught fire, killing 12 people, and the blaze burned for more than a week while about 5 lakh people were moved out.

Monsoon flooding of basements

Heavy rain fills low roads and basements faster than most people expect. On 1 August 2024, three people including a six-year-old girl drowned when rainwater flooded a basement in the Vishwakarma area.
