Local risks in Balasore

Hot work on an old fuel tank

On 28 October 2026 at a filling station at Baligohiri in Nilagiri, workers were cutting open an old fuel tank when sparks reportedly lit leftover fumes. The blast threw the tank lid and a worker standing nearby died; police detained four people, including the owner and manager, and we cover it in a case study.

Subarnarekha floods

In September 2024 the Subarnarekha put more than 250 villages under water in five blocks, including Bhograi, Jaleswar, Basta and Baliapal. In early July 2025 about 60 villages were still affected and two people had died.

Cyclones from the Bay of Bengal

During Cyclone Dana in October 2024 more than 1.5 lakh people were moved out of 12 blocks, three municipalities and two NACs of the district. The coast takes cyclones and heavy rain, so know your shelter before the warning arrives.

The 2023 Bahanaga train crash

On 2 June 2023 about 7 pm three trains collided near Bahanaga Bazar station in this district, and about 290 people died with hundreds hurt. Reports differ on the toll and the sequence, but the lesson for rail travellers and local helpers is the same: call 112 and keep the track side clear for rescue crews.

Gas leaks in small shops

On 19 January 2025 a gas leak from an LPG cylinder set a sweet shop kitchen on fire near Nilagiri block chowk, and three people were burned. Small food shops with cylinders, thatch or tin sheds and one door are a repeat risk in town and bazaar areas.
