Local risks in Tadadi (Gokarna area)

Foul air in a boat fish hold

On 27 October 2026 three fishermen died at Tadadi harbour after workers went into a boat's fish storage compartment to clean it and reported trouble breathing; two others were pulled out, one of them critical, and Gokarna police registered a case. Suffocation is suspected but the cause is not confirmed, so treat the air in any closed hold, tank or ice room as unsafe until proven otherwise.

Drowning at Gokarna beaches

In April 2025 two final-year medical students were swept away by strong waves at Kudle beach while watching the sunset, and police registered a case of negligence over the guide who took the group to the spot. Lifeguards at Gokarna beaches have also rescued swimmers in trouble, so the sea here is rougher than it looks.

Landslides beside NH 66 in the rains

On 11 June 2017 heavy rain brought mud and boulders down from a cliff beside NH 66 at Tandrakuli village in Kumta taluk, killing three children and wrecking at least eight roadside houses. Residents blamed unscientific highway work for the slide.

Floods, cyclones and sea erosion on the coast

District disaster planning names heavy-rain floods in the coastal taluks, floods from dam releases, and cyclones and sea erosion every year as hazards. Tadadi sits where the Aghanashini river meets the sea, so boats and harbour workers feel both rough sea and a swollen river.

Boat mishaps on the Karwar coast

On 21 January 2019 a boat carrying 33 passengers back from a temple island festival capsized near Karwar, the district headquarters; 14 people died, including three children, and 18 were rescued. Karwar is well north of Tadadi, but it shows how fast a crowded boat can turn into a major rescue.
